Discover Akaa
Accommodation in Akaa
Akaa can be discovered from different angles: railway history in Toijala, routes through natural and cultural sites, and local honey and wallpaper-making traditions offer different ways to focus your trip. This is helpful if you want to plan your stay around whether you would rather spend time outdoors, visit museums or get to know regional products.
Nature trails and routes in Akaa
The Terisjärvi nature trail is about 8.6 kilometres long. It runs from Nahkialanvuori via Terisjärvi and Satama to Kangassaari. Signs along the route provide information about the area and its nature; there is also a bird tower, which was renovated in spring 2023. The route length and named stops provide a concrete basis for including this trail in your day’s plans.
The 1.9-kilometre Kuusikangas fitness trail is in the Toijala district. A route from there leads to the Isokuusi loop, where you will find a shelter and equipment for independent outdoor exercise. For a different way to get around, the Pikku-Vanaja cycling route runs for about 45 kilometres through Toijala and Valkeakoski. A cycling trip around Lake Jalanti can also be combined with a visit to the Kinnari Local History Museum and an afternoon coffee break.
Culture and railway history
Akaa’s cultural environment trail in Toijala runs for about 1.5 kilometres through the northern part of the town centre and includes ten cultural and natural sites. QR codes on the signs provide access to audio guides. You can treat the route as a cultural trail of its own, combining the stops with information available on site.
Veturimuseo is a specialist museum with locomotives, track maintenance machinery and other related artefacts. It is housed in a red locomotive shed completed in 1876, opposite Toijala railway station. Guided tours tell the stories of Jumbo and Kisko-Kalle’s early years. The museum is open daily during the summer season, from early June to the end of August; outside this period, visits are possible by appointment.
Wallpaper making is another of Toijala’s special features: Tapettitehdas Pihlgren ja Ritola produces designer and traditional wallpapers using traditional rotary printing techniques; all the wallpaper is made entirely on site. At the factory shop at Satamatie 8, close to the factory, you can browse the collections and buy wallpaper with help from the staff. The Kinnari Local History Museum adds to the cultural offerings with a main building dating from 1815 and several outbuildings. Its exhibitions include collections of tableware, numerous tools and a ski collection.
Honey, farm visits and travel planning
Akaa is known as Finland’s honey capital, and locally produced honey is available there year-round. If you would like to learn more about bees, you can visit Risto Niilimäki’s demonstration apiary near the centre of Toijala: groups can learn about the lives of bees by booking in advance. Teristen Kartano is a farm in the Toijala district, on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. Guided tours for coach groups and smaller groups are offered there, particularly in summer, by prior arrangement.
When choosing a holiday apartment or cottage in Akaa, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay. Toijala railway station is a busy rail hub where long-distance and local trains meet on routes towards Turku, Tampere and Helsinki. VR trains also run from Toijala and Viiala stations towards these cities. If rail connections are important for your journey, take these stations into account when planning; if your stay is centred on nature trails or cycling, the routes described above may be your priority instead.
