Punkalaidun combines a distinctive cultural history with forest and river landscapes. In the centre, the church and rectory shape the appearance of a built cultural landscape of national significance. Other highlights include the Yli-Kirra Farm Museum, trails through varied landscapes and an observation tower offering views across the municipality. These different attractions can help you decide what kind of stay you prefer when looking for a holiday apartment in Punkalaidun.

Church, Rectory and Cultural Route

Punkalaidun Church was built in 1774. Its current altarpiece dates from 1888: Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin painted the Transfiguration of Christ. The rectory was completed in 1898 and is one of Finland’s largest wooden rectories. Together with the church, it reflects the historic character of the centre, which is considered a built cultural landscape of national significance.

The cultural route runs from the church through the village of Mäenpää to the workers’ association building. From there, it continues to the Sarkkila elementary school and then to the rectory. Its stops explore different aspects of local history. If you would like to focus your trip particularly on cultural history, this route provides a concrete starting point for exploring Punkalaidun.

Yli-Kirra: a 19th-century farm

The Yli-Kirra Farm Museum is a typical 19th-century Satakunta farm built around an enclosed courtyard. Its buildings include a smokehouse, a cooking hut and an outdoor oven suitable for baking. They illustrate the living conditions of the landless population in the 19th century. Yli-Kirra is therefore not just about the farm’s architectural style, but also about the conditions in which people lived at the time.

The historic event Kaikkien Aikojen Maatalousnäyttely (Agricultural Exhibition of All Times) is held on the site every year on the first weekend of July. It adds a historically themed event to the experience of the farm. The annual event and the museum buildings offer different reasons to visit: one takes place on a set weekend, while the others tell the story of 19th-century farming life.

River Landscapes, Forest and Views

The cultural landscape of the Punkalaitumenjoki River is a nationally valuable landscape area. Those interested in the landscape around Punkalaidun can also find different perspectives on the Pappila Forest Trail and at Porttikallio. The signposted Pappila Forest Trail is about half a kilometre long and passes through an old forest among mature spruces and blueberry-covered mounds. At the summit of Porttikallio, an observation tower offers expansive views across the municipality.

There are also opportunities to enjoy the water within the municipality: the municipality maintains two beaches at Lake Vehkajärvi, Kiviranta and Järvelä. They are located within the municipality; they offer a different landscape option from the river landscape of the Punkalaitumenjoki. When planning your trip, you can choose between forest, views, river landscapes and a swimming destination within the municipality.

Trails with Different Focuses

Pitäjänpolku runs through the settlement, past a cemetery and through the fields and river landscapes in the centre of Punkalaidun. Maps for the trail are available at the starting points by the municipal office and the rectory. The route thus combines views of the settlement with stretches through the surrounding fields and river landscapes.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Punkalaidun, your preferred focus may help you choose: the cultural route and Yli-Kirra offer points of interest for history enthusiasts, while the Pappila Forest Trail, Porttikallio and the river landscape place more emphasis on nature and scenery. Another landmark is the path from the car park to Konatun Kellari: red-and-yellow marker ribbons on the trees mark the way.
