Vierumäki: Nature, Trails and Sports
Accommodation in Vierumäki
Lakes, narrow eskers and a network of cycling and hiking trails define Vierumäki. The landscape lies on the sandur and delta plains of the Second Salpausselkä, which formed from sand and gravel at the edge of the continental ice sheet almost 12,000 years ago. Those looking to combine nature experiences with exercise will find a range of trails and activities to suit different day plans.
Hiking among lakes and eskers
The Lemmenharju Nature Trail is 4.1 kilometres long and runs alongside clear lakes and beautiful eskers. Other nature trails follow narrow, steep-sided eskers surrounded by small lakes. The marked trails and existing network of paths make it possible to hike and enjoy the outdoors all year round. In summer, the ski tracks become well-maintained nature trails suitable for hiking and jogging.
Cyclists can also choose from routes of different lengths: the area around Vierumäki has mountain biking trails of 3, 5, 7 and 10 kilometres. Mountain bikes can be rented from the Vierumäki Outdoor Centre in person or through its online shop. The Valo-Ilves route is 12 kilometres long and runs from Vierumäki to the Jyränkö district of Heinola. Vierumäki’s illuminated ski tracks range from 3 to 25 kilometres.
Active hours and time by the water
At Flowpark, adventure courses wind through living trees without damaging them. Different challenges await, depending on your ability: swaying paths, liana jumps, swings and zip lines. The climbing adventure park offers challenging, Tarzan-style adventures for the whole family or a group of friends. If you’d rather play a round of disc golf, Vierumäki has a family-friendly course with seven holes. It is about one kilometre long and starts at the ice arena.
SUP boards and canoes are available at Melontaranta on the shore of Lake Valkjärvi. Vierumäki’s lakeside saunas combine sauna sessions with the opportunity to swim. This means that, alongside longer excursions, you can also enjoy activities on the lake and periods of relaxation. When choosing a holiday rental in Vierumäki, it may therefore be helpful to first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on hiking, cycling, sports or time by the water.
Sports facilities and getting there
Vierumäki also offers facilities for focused training in various sports, including an ice arena, a multi-purpose arena, a tennis and padel hall, a sports hall, swimming pools and outdoor facilities. The Sports Institute of Finland is an official training and coaching centre of the Finnish Olympic Committee. If you want to make targeted use of the sports facilities as well as the nature trails, you can take this focus into account when choosing your destination and accommodation.
