Seinäjoki: Aalto Architecture, Museums and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Seinäjoki
Seinäjoki can be explored in many different ways: as a city of Alvar Aalto’s architecture, with museums dedicated to regional history, and with nature trails around forests and lakes. The Aalto Centre is a unique administrative and cultural centre designed by Aalto and part of the Aalto Works UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. Those who want to combine culture with outdoor activities will find opportunities here for both day trips and a stay with children.
Experience Alvar Aalto’s Architecture
The Aalto Centre comprises six buildings and Kansalaistori, which was completed in 1988. On a guided tour, participants visit buildings in the centre. Lakeuden Risti, Apila Library, the City Theatre and the Aalto Library each illustrate Aalto’s architectural solutions and the history behind them in their own way. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but on different examples of his architectural work.
Kalevan Navetta also brings together a distinctive building and contemporary culture: it was built in the 1890s and opened as an art and cultural centre in 2020. Seinäjoki Art Hall hosts temporary art exhibitions, events and art workshops for people of all ages there. Seinäjoki Art Hall features solo and group exhibitions from Finland and abroad, and also offers a varied programme of art events.
Museums: Regional History and Art
The Museum of South Ostrobothnia in Törnävä presents the history of the region and Seinäjoki. Museum tours may also include a visit to Törnävä Manor; the tours are included in the museum admission price. They lead through the manor’s wooded grounds to Seinäjoki’s former iron and gunpowder mills and a traditional farm that presents South Ostrobothnian farming culture. The manor park follows a 19th-century park plan. Each year, the manor takes part in four major museum events: Pääsiäisrieha, the summer season opening celebrations, the Östermyra Days and Joulun tuntu.
Sairaalamuseo explores the history of healthcare in South Ostrobothnia—from psychiatry to somatic medicine—as well as the work of Härmä Hospital. Around 40 exhibition rooms present, among other topics, hospitals in South Ostrobothnia, nursing, the treatment of childhood illnesses, surgery, neurology and diseases that have been overcome. The permanent exhibition at the Civil Guard and Lotta Svärd Museum offers another perspective on Finnish history: it covers the voluntary work and contribution of the Civil Guard, the Lotta Svärd organisation and the Jaeger troops to national defence.
Art and Crafts at Kalevan Navetta
Kalevan Navetta brings art, crafts and events together under one roof. The offerings include Taito Shop Seinäjoki for crafts and gifts, the Taidelainaamo Parsi art rental service, and Äärellä restaurant and bistro. Groups can book lunches, workshops and guided tours. This makes the centre more than just an exhibition destination: crafts and events are also among the themes brought together there.
Nature Trails and Family Outings
The Kyrkösjärven kierros circular route runs around Lake Kyrkösjärvi. It follows good sandy paths through the forest and along the dam beside the lake. The illuminated, accessible Jouppilanvuori adventure trail features, among other things, Tukikohta Vuori, a historic shelter, a military-style obstacle course and the Aarnikotka hut. There is also a shelter for photographing birds and wildlife, a bat shelter, a birdhouse gallery and poetry boards.
For families with children, the 650-metre accessible Oravapolku nature trail offers a discovery tour of its own: designed for children, it passes, among other things, a small toy museum, a barefoot path and a health forest. The children’s squirrel trail in Kyrkösjärvi Recreation Park includes a small museum, a fairytale hay barn, touchable mushrooms, a birdhouse park and nature-themed artworks; the story of Nyyrikki is also told there.
Geology is the focus at Kivipuisto. The grounds of Käpälikkö Nature Centre feature eight geological stations. There is also the 700-metre accessible Kivipolku trail, with 22 different geological stations. In the park at Törnävä Manor, Ruutipuisto lies north of the island; it was established as a nature reserve in 1948. The popular adventure steps lead to a viewpoint overlooking Seinäjoki.
Whether you are especially interested in Aalto’s architecture, regional history, art or nature trails, these different highlights offer practical reasons to choose Seinäjoki as a destination and plan your stay around your own interests.
