Alajärvi is a destination for anyone who wants to include Finnish architecture, art and landscapes in their holiday plans. Alvar Aalto’s buildings add a distinctive cultural touch to the town; on the shores of Lake Lappajärvi and at Pyhävuori, you can discover a completely different side of the region. When choosing your holiday accommodation, you can decide whether to focus mainly on cultural discoveries, hiking or a varied programme.

Aalto Architecture and Art in Alajärvi

Villa Väinölä is a striking example of Aalto’s work. Completed in 1926, it was designed by Alvar Aalto as a home and office for his brother Väinö Aalto and his family. Guided tours of the Aalto sites in Alajärvi can be booked by email. You can also explore Aaltopuisto independently: information boards at the buildings provide guidance, a map is displayed on an information board in front of the library, and QR codes at the sites link to video presentations.

The town hall is also one of the city’s Aalto sites and is regarded as its largest and most significant. The council chamber contains furnishings designed by Aalto, including tables, chairs and lamps; seating is also available in the foyer. Villa Väinölä offers another perspective on the architecture as an accessible exhibition and event centre. In collaboration with local schools, clubs, organisations and other groups, it hosts art exhibitions, workshops and concerts.

The Nelimarkka Museum is another important destination for art lovers. It is the regional art museum of South Ostrobothnia, has operated as a regional art museum since 1995, and has been a regional responsibility museum since 1 January 2020. Its changing exhibitions, workshops and events are open to all age groups. As well as Aalto’s architecture, Alajärvi offers different ways to experience art, from museum visits to exhibitions and events at Villa Väinölä.

Crater Lake, Pyhävuori and Activities

Alajärvi lies on the edge of Lake Lappajärvi, which the city describes as Europe’s largest crater lake. The impact’s effects are still visible in the area, including at Pyhävuori. From there, you can enjoy far-reaching views across the Järviseutu region. If you want to include nature experiences in your trip, Pyhävuori has marked circular hiking trails of different lengths: the OP Loop is 2.6 kilometres long, while the Peikko Loop is about one kilometre. The distance information helps you tailor your hiking plans to the length of trail you prefer.

For another sporting activity, try Alajärvi DiscGolfPark, which has 18 holes and starts at Alajärvi’s outdoor sports centre. Cycling is another option: the Alajärvi MTB race course is about 17 kilometres long and includes an additional Alajärvi MTB trail of about 3 kilometres. These activities offer a different focus from the circular trails at Pyhävuori and can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your trip.

A Summer Market Day

Alajärvi’s recurring events include the summer Rokulipäivät. Held annually, they attract many market visitors from the local community, holiday home guests and travellers.

More places to discover: Kauhava, Länsikylä, Lehtimäki, Ilmajoki, Peräseinäjoki, Soini, Ähtäri, Ojutkangas.

For the overarching travel overview: South Ostrobothnia.
