Ähtäri combines experiences in nature with hiking trails and a distinctive cultural offering. A major attraction is Ähtäri Zoo: in a natural setting, you can see around 30 animal species and more than 100 animals. Founded in 1973, the zoo is considered Finland’s oldest zoo in a natural setting. There is also a practical landmark for your journey: the zoo has its own railway stop, listed by VR under the name Ähtärin Eläinpuisto Zoo. From the stop, it is about a 15-minute walk to the zoo.

Hiking trails for different day plans

If you’re looking for a manageable walk, the Kierinniemi nature trail is a 2.7 km, moderately challenging loop on a peninsula surrounded by a lake. Information boards explain the history of the forest; along the way, you’ll find an old pine tree and moss-covered trenches. The trail is signposted and suitable as a day-trip destination for all age groups. In places, it is stony and has exposed roots—a useful detail to consider when choosing footwear and who to take along.

The easy Nallenpolku trail follows the lakeshore through Ähtäri’s tourism area. It is 8.6 km there and back, or 4.3 km each way. Most of it is lit and signposted; rest areas and three boards about local history are among the features along the route, along with accommodation and summer cafés. This means you can plan your trip as a full return journey or as a one-way route.

A longer option is the signposted Välivesi circular route in the tourism area. It is about 24 km long and suitable for mountain biking and hiking. Forest, sand and asphalt sections alternate with boardwalks. There are four rest areas along the route, and up to six with short detours. The 4.8 km, moderately challenging Niemisjoki hiking and fishing trail leads from Ähtäri Zoo to the Ohrakoski shelter. At first, it follows a foot and cycle path and a village road; after three kilometres, it becomes a trail. Along the route, there is a laavu shelter with fire pits and a toilet.

If you’re considering several stages, explore the Arpainen hiking and recreation trail network, which extends for more than 50 km from Ähtäri Zoo to the centre of Soini. Sections include Kalevin kiekka (3.5 km), Arpaiskämppä–Saarilammin laavu (3.4 km) and Arpaiskämppä–Arpainen järvi (0.4 km). At Arpaiskämppä, there is a heated cabin, a woodshed, an outhouse, a riverside sauna and a fire pit; camping is possible.

Art, local history and architecture

The cultural trails also offer different points of interest. The approximately 5 km cultural trail in the centre starts and ends at the Pirkanlinna Cultural Centre. On foot or by bicycle, it passes areas, buildings and monuments of local cultural and historical value. The approximately 2 km Veden polku leads to works by sculptor and professor Eero Hiironen and also introduces the local cultural heritage.

The Pirkanpohja Art Centre consists of the Blue House, the Red House and a sculpture park. Its collections include works by Hiironen and leading European art; changing exhibitions are also held. At the Vääräkoski factory site, guided tours or presentations of the cardboard factory are currently available by appointment. The site is of considerable national cultural and historical significance because of its industrial history, environmental values, and the state of preservation and uniqueness of its facilities. The pulp mill and cardboard factory are protected under the Building Protection Act by a decision dated 8 May 2002.

The present-day, fourth church of Ähtäri was built in 1937 to plans by Bertel Liljeqvist. As a modern 1930s long church, it is rare in the church architecture of Pohjanmaa. Honkiniemi Church is a wooden church completed in 1999. The local history museum is open from June to August; outside these months, visits are possible by appointment. The historic forest chapel stands on a rock in a natural lakeside landscape; you can borrow its key from the hotel reception.

More activities and finding the right holiday accommodation

Mustikkavuori Ski Centre has lit cross-country ski trails of 5 km, 3 km and 7.5 km. The illuminated ski area includes jumps and roller sections, as well as a toboggan slope and a fire pit. The trail profiles are suitable for training and competition training. The fitness staircase has 250 steps over just under 130 m; it continues to a viewing platform atop a 10 m-high observation tower. From there, the view extends over the centre of Ähtäri and the surrounding area, rich in water.

On the shore of Lake Hankavesi, Saunaravintola Kiulu rents jet skis, e-bikes, SUP boards and boats; snowmobiles are also available in winter. Ähtäri Golf is an 18-hole course in the tourism area. When choosing a holiday apartment or cottage, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: hikes of varying lengths, art and local history, winter sports or activities on the lake. Ähtäri is also located on Highway 18 and Main Road 68. Check the location of your accommodation in relation to the places and activities you’d like to include in your trip.
