Eura offers several ways to explore its history and landscape: a prehistoric information centre in the town centre, notable architecture, and nature and outdoor activities throughout the municipality. This means you can choose from culture, local traditions and outdoor activities for your trip.

Prehistoric history and distinctive buildings

Naurava lohikäärme is Finland’s first prehistoric information centre. Its changing exhibitions explore Eura’s prehistory and early history, especially the Viking Age, from 800 to 1050 AD. It is located in an old stone barn designed by Jalmari Karhula, in the centre of Eura at Eurantie 18. The entrance is in the middle of the side facing the cycle path. There is plenty of free parking around the building, and it is about a 500-metre walk from Eura bus station. The changing exhibitions make the centre a destination for anyone interested in exploring different aspects of early history.

Eura Church is also of architectural and historical interest. It was designed by Josef Stenbäck and completed in 1898. It is the third church to stand on this site. The two earlier churches were made of wood and were completed in 1640 and 1728, respectively. Together with its surroundings, the church forms a cohesive landscape ensemble that is also nationally significant. For visitors interested in architectural history, the story of the present building’s construction is intertwined with the longer history of the site.

Another notable building is Euran Pirtti. This community hall, designed by Jalmari Karhula, was completed in 1908. It is among Finland’s most representative community halls and is a nationally significant architectural monument. It adds another example of Eura’s architecture to the history of the church and information centre.

Traditions and local insights

Euran Pirtti is also associated with a baking tradition: several thousand Euran rinkilä are baked there each year by volunteers. The tradition is also kept alive in home economics classes at Eura’s schools. It is carried on both through community baking and by passing it on to the next generation.

Near Euran Pirtti, Soveron taidetalo welcomes groups and travellers who drop in spontaneously. With its appropriate furnishings, this more than 100-year-old wooden house offers a glimpse into past decades. Those interested in local architecture and everyday life can find a different perspective here than in the exhibitions on prehistory and early history.

Nature and outdoor activities in the municipality

Eura’s natural attractions offer a range of experiences. Harola lies at the northwestern corner of Lake Pyhäjärvi. Its landscape includes particularly species-rich deciduous and mixed forests, nationally valuable old natural habitats, upland forests, swamp forests and lakeshores. At Lake Koskeljärvi, a network of natural areas, shelters and hiking trails awaits; the lake is also an internationally valuable area for waterbirds. These destinations appeal to travellers who want to include forests, waterways and nature watching in their plans.

Several routes of varying lengths are available for walks and outdoor exercise. The Euran kuntorata has a five-kilometre illuminated section. Another route runs from Eura’s athletics stadium to Euranrinkilä and is about 1.5 kilometres long. In the village of Honkilahti, the Sieravuori Outdoor Trail is about 8.1 kilometres long and suitable for a range of hiking and outdoor activities. The Hiittenkari nature trail in the village of Kauttua leads to a distinctive, unique headland jutting into Lake Pyhäjärvi.

The municipality has a total of eleven kilometres of illuminated fitness trails, as well as about 30 to 50 kilometres of ski trails, depending on snow conditions. If you are considering winter activities, bear in mind that the stated length of the ski trails depends on snow conditions. Eura’s sports centre includes an athletics facility and a football stadium. The sports grounds also have tennis courts, outdoor basketball and beach volleyball courts, a disc golf course, and an ice hockey area in winter.

Choosing Eura as a destination

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: the changing exhibitions on early history, the buildings and traditions, or the municipality’s nature and outdoor activities. This lets you tailor your search to the kind of trip you want, without having to limit your cultural or nature interests to a single itinerary.
