Utajärvi offers unusual insights into the history of the Earth and many connections to the history of the church village. Kivipuisto features more than 50 large rock samples that illustrate the development of the Finnish bedrock. There is also a remarkably old specimen: the oldest stone in the park is 3.5-billion-year-old Siurua gneiss, considered the oldest rock in the bedrock of the European Union. If you would rather take in the landscape from above, the Kutukukkula viewpoint near the centre is a place from which you can admire the Utajärvi landscape.

Experience geology and nature

The “Aikamatka” exhibition at Torimakasiini also explores the story of how the area came into being. It traces the early stages of bedrock development, the last Ice Age and the formation of eskers and dune formations. Other topics include the spread of human settlement and living organisms after the Ice Age. The perspective thus extends well beyond individual rock samples to encompass the development of the landscape in the Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark.

There are various ways to get active. Visitors can explore the cultural and historical sites of the church village on the Utajärvi Cultural Trail. The municipality offers year-round opportunities to spend time in nature, as well as good routes for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. Near the centre, in Siiransaari, there is also an 18-hole disc golf course in hilly, forested terrain. During your stay, you can choose to focus on nature, outdoor activities or local history.

Local history in the church village

Completed in 1762, Utajärvi Church has 320 seats. The vicarage grounds have been inhabited since the 17th century; the oldest parts of the present main building date from 1763, with other parts dating from the 1890s and the 1950s. The railway station is also part of local history: completed in 1927, it has been classified as a regionally significant cultural heritage site.

On the old market square, the Roomaripatsas statue commemorates the work of log drivers and ferrymen. A heroes’ cemetery and several memorials are located next to the church. These include a red granite monument erected in 1958 in memory of those who died in Karelia. The Veteraanikivi, a memorial stone completed in 1991, stands in Veteraanipuisto opposite the library, by Postilanoja in the church village.

Exhibitions and museum

Torimakasiini is located in the central built-up area at Vanhatie 8. The ground floor houses a seasonal café and an information point, while the upper floor has exhibition rooms. The “Utajärven aikajana” exhibition tells the story of Utajärvi, from the land rising from the sea to the most recent events. Torimakasiini thus brings together a broad perspective on the development of the landscape and an account of local history.

The local heritage museum is next to the church, in a former granary, and has around 300 catalogued objects. A rapids boat, built to a model from the early 20th century, is also kept in a shelter on the museum grounds. The museum is open during the summer Kotiseutuviikko and is otherwise accessible by appointment. If you plan to visit, take these access arrangements into account when planning your stay.

More to discover around the municipality

Kurimo, by the Kurimonkoski rapids, offers nature experiences and brings to life the story of the former, once-thriving ironworks community. Another historic site is Sotkakosken möljä: the surviving stone embankment lies in the river behind the Sotka cemetery and can be reached by a path leading to a steep bank. These places broaden the experience beyond the exhibitions and historic sites in the church village.

When choosing holiday accommodation, consider which of Utajärvi’s attractions matters most for your trip: geology and landscapes, a walk along the Cultural Trail, or local history at the museum and exhibitions. These experiences offer different themes, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.
