Pudasjärvi can be explored in different ways: some trails start in the centre, while nature destinations and other experiences are located in the surrounding municipality. Culture is part of the picture, too. When looking for a holiday rental, this distinction may be helpful: consider whether you mainly want to explore the trails near the centre or plan excursions to destinations elsewhere in the municipality. This way, you can base your choice on the experiences that matter to you.

Trails from the centre to the riverbank

The Kannonnousu hiking trail, also called the Syöte-Kurenalus hiking trail, starts in the centre of Pudasjärvi and ends on the shore of Naamankajärvi in Syöte. There are numerous rest stops along the trail and many wooden boardwalks across wetlands. These details give the trail a clear profile: it connects a starting point in the centre with a named destination on the lakeshore. If you are interested in this route, you can compare it with a shorter trail described as being closer to the centre, without treating the two routes as the same.

Rantaraitti is an approximately 1.5-kilometre scenic and fitness trail in the immediate vicinity of the centre. It follows the riverbank. This gives you two different descriptions to choose from: Kannonnousu has a named start and end point, while Rantaraitti is described by its approximate length and route along the riverbank. Which type of trail suits your plans depends on whether you are looking for a route between two points or a trail near the centre.

Nature experiences in the municipality

Syöte National Park and its recreation area also have an extensive network of trails: together, the trails are 122 kilometres long and are suitable for hiking and cycling. This figure describes the total length of the trails, not a single route. Dog sledding and snowshoeing are also available in Syöte. The Iso-Syöte Express chairlift takes pedestrians to the summit of Iso-Syöte; you can choose a one-way or return trip. Operating hours may change, so check whether the lift is running on your travel dates before you go.

The Juutislammen luontopolku nature trail is in Sarakylä, in northeastern Pudasjärvi, and loops around a lake known as a good bird-watching site. The trail is just under three kilometres long, is considered easy to walk, and is suitable for families. Along the way, there is a birdwatching tower, a jetty, and a lean-to shelter with fire pits. This combination of a lake, trail and several facilities makes the path a nature experience in its own right within the municipality.

Another nature trail, Kellarilammen luontopolku, is one kilometre long. Its starting point is at Rytinkisalmentie 1834 in Pudasjärvi. If you want to compare trails by length, this one has a specific distance, while the Juutislammen trail is described as just under three kilometres long and as having various facilities.

Local history and distinctive landscapes

The Pudasjärven kotiseutumuseo is in the surrounding municipality, about ten kilometres from the centre. It is located on road 855, Siuruantie, right next to Pudasjärvi Church. The museum complex includes more than twenty buildings. If you are interested in local history, you will find a larger ensemble here rather than a single museum building; its location can also be understood in terms of the stated distance from the centre.

Pudasjärvi’s kotiseutuviikko, or local heritage week, takes place every year in late July. The programme includes demonstrations of traditional crafts, a children’s museum day, themed guided tours of the museum grounds, theatre performances and other events. Events are held mainly in the courtyard of the local history museum; the programme may vary. The children’s museum day is a specific highlight for families, while the week also features traditional crafts and performances.

Another distinctive site is Jumalanhauta in Korpinen, in southeastern Pudasjärvi. The formation is 30 metres wide and 15 metres deep. It formed about 9,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. Its dimensions and approximate age give this nature destination a specific geological character, distinguishing it from the hiking trails and cultural activities described above.
