Forest trails across rocks, a canoe route to the coast and museums covering a wide range of subjects define Paimio. Here, you can combine active days with insights into local history. You can also take travel into account: Föli public transport services from the direction of Turku run regularly to the town.

Hiking and cycling on a variety of trails

The Paimion polku is 18.7 kilometres long in total; you can also choose shorter sections instead of completing the whole route. For the most part, the trail runs along forest paths over rocks and through woodland. Some sections follow gravel roads or short stretches of roads with light traffic. From a high hill, the view extends to Paimionlahti. If you enjoy walking, you’ll find a trail with varied terrain and the option of making the route shorter. The Paimion polku can also be ridden by mountain bike.

Helmi MTB is a dedicated mountain biking option. When the network opened on 21 May 2022, its first phase included a challenging 6-kilometre route, an easier 3-kilometre route and a short track of about 300 metres. The different route lengths and difficulty ratings give mountain bikers specific information to help plan their time in Paimio.

By canoe from the river to the sea

The Paimionjoki canoe route leads from Jokipuisto in the centre of Paimio to Paimionlahti by the sea. It passes through tranquil river landscapes to the coast, is considered easy and is also suitable for beginners and families. This makes the experience quite different from the forest and rocky sections of the Paimion polku: the canoe route focuses on the river landscape and the journey towards the coast. For families who want to enjoy outdoor activities together, this tour is a separate option alongside hiking and cycling.

Museums spanning everyday culture and technology

The cultural history museum Paimion kotiseutumuseo is maintained by the City of Paimio. It consists of seven museum buildings, moved around 1950 from different parts of Paimio to Museomäki in Oinila. The buildings illustrate the history of traditional agriculture. Seeing several buildings makes this museum a different kind of historical experience from a single specialist museum.

In central Paimio, the specialist museum Paimion Sähkömuseo presents the history of electrical engineering. You can try out various electrical devices there. The Miila Handicrafts Museum is also in the centre: it presents everyday craft culture in a Functionalist building. The history of technology and everyday craft traditions thus offer two different themes for a cultural part of your stay.

The August-Pyölniittu Museum focuses on the home and working environment of August Pyölniittu, a self-taught scholar and village eccentric. It also preserves the modest family life of his sisters Ida and Olga on a small farm in the village of Maljamäki in Paimio. The property was turned into a museum in the 1980s. The focus here is on a particular way of life on a small farm, while the kotiseutumuseo illustrates traditional agriculture through its seven buildings.

More activities and landscapes

There is also a special option for cross-country skiing: the Paippi ski tunnel makes it possible to ski outside the winter season itself. A lap is 700 metres long, and the tunnel is six metres wide; it is suitable for both classic and freestyle techniques. Varasvuoren mäkikeskus is one of Finland’s regional ski jumping centres. It has five A-class ski jumps covered with plastic matting: K2, K8, K15, K29 and K58. The matting allows training almost all year round.

Along the lower reaches of the Paimionjoki lies Lower Paimionjokilaakso, a nationally valuable landscape area in Finland. Finland’s oldest tourist route, the Kuninkaantie, also passes through Paimio. Together with opportunities for hiking, cycling and canoeing, this offers several ways to shape your travel plans. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can decide whether to focus more on nature and outdoor activities or on museums and cultural history. Regular Föli services from the direction of Turku make both day trips and longer stays by public transport possible.
