Hyytiälä: Forest Research, Cultural Heritage and Kuivajärvi
Accommodation in Hyytiälä
The Hyytiälä Research Station is located on the scenic shore of Kuivajärvi, surrounded by forests of different ages. Research, a historic courtyard and seasonal activities also shape the character of the place.
Forest, water and research topics
The Hyytiälä Science Trail consists of 18 information boards. It introduces research topics related to forests, soils, lakes, rivers, mires and the climate. The range of topics offers different points of interest: those interested in forests and soil will encounter different subjects from those interested in lakes, rivers or mires. For families, the topics can provide conversation starters because they relate to specific aspects of nature.
A disc golf course starts next to the Hyytiälä Science Trail starting point. This means visitors to Hyytiälä can choose between different interests, including natural science topics and disc golf. Hyytiälä also offers school and university student groups a guided tour of the SMEAR II station, lasting about two hours. The station measures interactions between ecosystems and the atmosphere. This tour is intended for school or university groups and complements the Science Trail topics with an insight into the measurements carried out at the station.
Historic courtyard and Finnish cultural heritage
The buildings in the old courtyard of the Hyytiälä Forest Station were completed in 1911–1912. Their architectural design represents National Romanticism. The historic buildings are part of Finnish cultural heritage and have been conserved by the National Board of Antiquities and Historical Monuments. Thus, alongside its research station, Hyytiälä also has a historic side: the courtyard tells the story of an earlier period of construction, while the Science Trail explores topics related to forests, water and the climate. Visitors interested in cultural history can take this focus into account when choosing their destination, alongside the nature and research topics.
Shore paths and seasonal differences
Forests of different ages lie around the research station, and Pehkusuo is within walking distance. Makkarakallio is a scenic campfire site, located about 500 metres from the small sauna along a shore path. These specific natural and local features give a stay a different emphasis from the information boards and historic buildings.
The seasons also offer different possibilities. During the summer season, from May to October, the early 20th-century log cabins Impivaara, Pilvilinna, Tapiola and Impilinna are used as accommodation at the Hyytiälä Forest Station. Ski trails are usually available at the station from late January to early March. Consider your preferred travel dates when planning your trip.
Getting there and finding your way around
The Hyytiälä Forest Station is about an hour's drive from Tampere. On site, the reception team is responsible for visitor arrangements and billing. If you are considering Hyytiälä as a base for your trip, you can take into account its distance from Tampere and the different seasonal activities when making your decision. The place brings together several distinct interests: research topics along the Science Trail, historic architecture, shorelines and forests, and seasonal opportunities.
