Joensuu between river, culture and nature
Accommodation in Joensuu
The Pielisjoki River flows through Joensuu and shapes the landscape in every season. The city also has museums in different locations, routes for longer bike rides and natural attractions for a peaceful outing. This makes it easy to plan a stay in many different ways: with art and city life, activities by the river or time in a nature reserve.
Museums and history in Joensuu
The Eliel Museum offers insights into the history and present-day life of North Karelia. It is located in Joensuu’s old town hall near the market square. Right in the city centre, the Joensuu Art Museum Onni offers art experiences for the whole family. If you’d like to include both regional history and art in your stay, these provide two distinct cultural points of interest.
The Joensuu Bunker Museum in Marjala, seven kilometres from the centre of Joensuu, offers a different perspective on history. Visitors can explore fortifications of the Salpa Line at their original location. The grounds feature two restored reinforced-concrete bunkers, as well as trenches and a series of tank barriers. The museum is suitable for all ages. The site’s distinctive features make a visit an engaging complement to the city’s museums.
Nature trails and cycling
For a walk through an important bird area, the 2.5-kilometre Noljakka Nature Trail runs through the nature reserve in the Höytiäinen Canal Delta. The delta is particularly important for its birdlife and is recognised as a rewarding birdwatching destination. Local bus routes provide access to the nature trail. Its manageable length and focus on birdwatching make this a different kind of nature experience from a long bike ride.
The Jaama Trail is a 60-kilometre circular route around the outskirts of Joensuu, running through the municipalities of Joensuu and Kontiolahti. Its varied terrain and extensive network of connecting trails make it particularly appealing for mountain biking. The trail has five shelters or campfire sites and seven beaches. Its length sets it apart from the short Noljakka Nature Trail: depending on whether you’re looking for a compact nature outing or a longer route, you can choose between different types of trail.
The banks of the Pielisjoki River also offer opportunities for paddling, inline skating and cycling. A roughly one-kilometre-long bike route runs from Pyhäselkä Beach to the Utra Islands. If you prefer a short bike ride, you can choose this route as a separate option; it should not be confused with the 60-kilometre Jaama Trail.
Market square, events and island experiences
Joensuu Market Square serves as a market and event space in the city centre throughout the year. In summer, it has numerous market stalls and cafés. Specialities on offer include Karelian pies as well as delicacies from around the world. This gives a visit to the market a culinary dimension, bringing regional traditions together with a wider selection.
The island of Ilosaari hosts the Ilovaarirock and Vekararokki festivals every year, along with other concerts and events. Joen Yö is Joensuu’s annual festival. The renovated island also has walking paths and swimming beaches. In winter, Saunakeidas on the shore of Ilosaari offers sauna experiences with ice swimming. There are therefore several reasons to include Ilosaari in your travel plans, whether for music and events, a walk or a winter sauna experience.
The Joensuu City Orchestra gives around 80 concerts each year, about a third of which feature full symphony programmes. From May to September, the M/S Sinivuokko offers cruises on the Pielisjoki River and Lake Pyhäselkä. These seasonal trips add a view from the water to the range of activities available there.
Choose the right base
When choosing a holiday apartment in Joensuu, the mix of city, nature and activities you’re looking for can help you decide where to stay. If museums, the market square and events are your priority, consider the attractions in the city centre. For cycling and hiking plans, the Jaama Trail, the banks of the Pielisjoki River or the nature reserve in the Höytiäinen Canal Delta are good options to consider as you plan your trip. Joensuu Airport is eleven kilometres from the city centre. The Koli National Park, an excursion destination in the surrounding area, is about an hour’s drive north of Joensuu.
