Konnevesi combines vibrant cultural attractions with special insights into rural Finland and experiences on the water. At the Konnevesi Museum, twelve traditional log buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries tell the story of the Savo building style. There is also a historic windmill, a blacksmith’s workshop and trails into nature. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Konnevesi, you can plan your days around whether you want to focus on cultural history, paddling, fishing or wildlife watching.

Art and History in Konnevesi

In the town centre, Galleria Käpy is a meeting place for art, culture and crafts. It offers exhibitions, events, workshops and courses, including regularly changing art exhibitions. During the summer season in particular, the gallery also serves as Konnevesi’s tourist information centre. Visitors can find information there about local attractions, events and services.

The Konnevesi Museum brings the region’s cultural heritage to life through its buildings. The smoke sauna building was originally constructed in the 18th century and offers a glimpse into traditional Finnish ways of life. The blacksmith’s workshop showcases metalworking techniques from rural Finland. The windmill also has its own history: it was built in 1867, moved to the museum in 1958 and restored in 2020 as part of the “Myllyt Pyörimään” project.

Another attraction at the museum is the Lehmipolku AR trail. Five augmented reality stations explore the history of cattle farming and Finnish native breeds. The museum grounds are also the main venue for Women’s Week, a cultural and arts event featuring music, art and talks, held every year in July.

Konnevesi Church is another distinctive local landmark: the grey granite Late Romantic church was designed by Ilmari Launis, completed in 1922 and consecrated at Pentecost in 1923. It is open only during services and other church events. This is important to bear in mind when planning a visit.

Experience the Water, Trails and Nature

South Konnevesi National Park was established in 2014 and spans the areas of Konnevesi and Rautalampi. From the nearby Häyrylänranta harbour, visitors can reach the national park by cruise boat, by paddling or in their own boat. The park is suitable for short and multi-day paddling trips alike; several routes in the national park and its surrounding area are maintained by the municipalities of Konnevesi and Rautalampi. This makes it possible to plan a stay around individual excursions or longer stretches of time on the water.

There are also various ways to enjoy walks and wildlife watching. The Partiomaja Trail is a loop through the forest along the Konnevesi rapids route; along the way are Taikinainen and Karinkoski, before the trail leads to Partiomaja. In the village of Särkisalo in Konnevesi, the Pieni-Selkiäinen bird tower stands in the Mertajärvi–Pieni-Selkiäinen Natura 2000 conservation area. A nature trail leads from an information point through the protected area; at the edge, boardwalks lead to the observation tower. A blue-marked trail runs along the shore of Lake Pyhäjärvi for just under a kilometre to the bird tower. Along the way, visitors can observe the lake scenery and birdlife. Lake Pyhäjärvi is protected under the Natura 2000 network and is surrounded by a broad wet meadow zone.

There are various options for fishing trips: at Siikakoski and Hannulankoski, you can fish from a drift boat with guidance from a fishing guide. At Kellankoski, purpose-built fishing platforms make it easier to cast. Nearby, Häyrylänranta offers a sandy beach with a diving tower, a caravan and campsite, and a range of services for boaters.

Choose the Right Holiday Base

For active days, consider paddling routes, forest trails and fishing opportunities. If you prefer to observe nature, you can plan a visit to the bird tower and the trail along Lake Pyhäjärvi. Konnevesi can also be reached by water from Lahti via canals connecting Lake Keitele and Lake Päijänne. From the north, the Neituri Canal connects Lake Keitele with North Konnevesi and continues the waterway to Pielavesi.
