In Janakkala, experiences range from nature trails in Laurinmäki and paths by Lake Mallinkaistenjärvi to the moorland of Suurisuo. There is also a museum presenting life in the late 19th century, music, and a ski and cycling centre. You can therefore tailor your stay to nature, culture or active pursuits.

Nature trails and paths by the water

In Laurinmäki, two nature trails differ in both length and difficulty: the moderately challenging Ketopolku is about 1.6 km long, while the more challenging Laavupolku is about 2.8 km long. If you prefer a shorter route on an outing, Ketopolku is the shorter of the two options. There is also a covered rest area along the Laurinmäki nature trails. The Laurinmäki Crofter’s Museum grounds and the nature trails can be explored independently using information boards outside opening hours.

At Lake Mallinkaistenjärvi, marked trails start at the Kahilahti shelter or the bathing beach and head both north and south. There are four campfire sites in the hiking area. The lakeside trails pass steep cliffs, including Valskerinkallio. The trailheads and different directions offer several starting points for a stay by the lake, while the cliffs shape the character of the lakeside paths.

Moorland and protected nature

In Suurisuo, long boardwalks lead in four different directions. Boardwalks across the moor also take you to a birdwatching tower. The route through the moor and the view from a lookout tower make the area an interesting choice if you want to combine time outdoors with nature watching. Suurisuo is home to several endangered and rare plant, insect and bird species.

Another natural highlight is the Saparonniemi Nature Reserve. Ash trees and small-leaved lime trees grow there and are protected under Finnish nature conservation law. This distinctive feature offers a particular reason to make the landscape and its plants the focus of an outing.

Culture, music and special places

The Laurinmäki Crofter’s Museum open-air museum offers a glimpse into the everyday life of tenant farmers in the late 19th century. Concerts and other cultural events take place in the museum area throughout the year. Music lovers can also enjoy Janakkalan Barokki, an annual early music festival held on the weekend after Midsummer.

The permanent exhibition at the Ida Aalberg Museum celebrates Ida Aalberg’s life’s work. In Tervakoski, the wooden church welcomes parishioners to services and musical events. Tervakoski Church is accessible via the entrance to the parish centre, for example, with a rollator or wheelchair. Another historical landmark is the former railway keeper’s house in Leppäkoski, Janakkala, which is covered by an agreement to protect nationally significant railway areas.

Active pursuits and getting there

Kalpalinna is a year-round ski and cycling centre in Turenki, Janakkala, in Häme. Its ski slopes cater to all skill levels and different types of equipment. If you are planning a trip with varied interests, you can balance this active option with Janakkala’s nature and cultural attractions. Puuhamaa’s water park is another activity described here: its slides include Kreisikouru and Rafting.

The Finnish main railway line runs through Janakkala, and commuter trains stop at Turenki railway station. If rail access matters when choosing a holiday rental, you can take Turenki into account as the named stopping point. To choose the focus of your trip, it helps to first consider whether you are more interested in nature trails and moorland, culture and music, or sports.
