Toholampi is known for its unspoilt nature and the Lestijoki River valley. Here, water-based activities meet trails through moorland landscapes and glimpses of local history. If you’re looking for holiday accommodation in Toholampi, these different sides of the area can help shape your holiday plans: paddling on the river, nature trails, or historic buildings and collections.

Exploring the Lestijoki

A rowing route on the Lestijoki starts at Lake Lestijärvi, passes through Toholampi and ends at the Gulf of Bothnia. The paddling route also starts at Lake Lestijärvi and passes through Toholampi. It is 102 km long, has a total elevation change of 120 m and 50 rapids, and ends at the Gulf of Bothnia. Early summer is considered the best time for this paddling route.

Moorland trails and nature experiences

The one-kilometre, accessible boardwalk to Paratiisisaari leads through a moorland area to Kunnankämppä. Another nature trail can be found at Kopsanneva, where the boardwalks form part of a marked trail. The nature trail is about 1.4 km long in total, with approximately 1 km of boardwalk. At one end, there is a birdwatching tower, a shelter, a campfire site, seating for 50 people, a toilet and a woodshed.

The route to Kopsanneva is also described: from the “Lintutorni” signpost, it runs for about 1.4 km along a gravel road. The nature trail starts directly beside the road. This access route should be distinguished from the nature trail’s approximate total length. The marked Erämaalatu ski trail network in Toholampi runs mostly through moorland and open fen landscapes. Nature trails and a ski trail network therefore offer different ways to experience the landscape.

In Sykäräinen, the Murennuskosken lean-to shelter is located on the banks of the Lestijoki. It is accessible by car, parking is available, and a boardwalk leads to the riverbank. Disc golf enthusiasts will find two courses in Toholampi, each with 18 holes: one in the sports trail area in the church village, and the other in Sykäräinen at Mörönpuro. You can borrow disc golf discs from the library to use at the local courses.

Church, architecture and local history

Toholampi Church was consecrated in 1861. It was designed by C. A. Zetterberg and built by Jaakko Kuorikoski. Pajamäki is a local heritage building dating from the 19th century and represents Toholampi’s traditional rural architectural style. The Pajamäki local heritage centre is open seasonally in summer; visits outside the summer season can be arranged by appointment.

The Häkkilä Local Heritage Museum collection tells the story of life in Toholampi from the Stone Age to the present day. The museum is 4 km from the centre of Toholampi, towards Kannus on the banks of the Lestijoki. Another historic building is the Lainamakasiini: completed in autumn 1858 on Ruuttusenkallio, it is located in the courtyard of the town hall at Lampintie 5 in Toholampi. The church, local heritage building, museum collection and granary each reveal a different aspect of Toholampi’s history and architecture.

Transport and choosing where to stay

Distances can be considerable in Toholampi, and public transport options are limited. For travel between towns, bus services connect Toholampi with neighbouring municipalities such as Kannus and Kokkola; the central bus stop is in the town centre. Keep these conditions in mind when choosing accommodation and planning your journeys. If bus connections are important for your stay, the location of the central stop in the town centre is a useful point of reference. For a trip to the Murennuskosken lean-to shelter, the described access by car is relevant.
