Viitasaari invites you to plan a trip that can combine active days with peaceful discoveries in different ways: At Savivuori, scenic views, trails and sports facilities are part of the recreation area; Vanha Kirkkosaari offers a different experience with its almost entirely undeveloped landscape. When choosing your holiday apartment, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus mainly on nature and outdoor activities, island and lake experiences, or include culture in your trip as well.

Savivuori: Trails, Views and Outdoor Activities

The versatile Savivuori recreation area is located within the built-up area of Viitasaari. Its nature trail offers two options: Rannan lumo is the shorter route, while Metsän tuulahdus is the longer one. This lets you plan your day around your preferred route length without treating the two trails as if they were the same. From the observation tower on Savivuori, you can see the built-up area and the surrounding lake landscape.

If you would rather get around by bike, there is an extensive mountain biking trail network with elevation changes. Savivuori also has a MOBO orienteering course that can be used with a smartphone; to use it, download the MOBO app to your device from an app store. The disc golf course has 18 holes. They are suitable for beginners while also offering challenges for experienced players.

A visit to the recreation area can also include berry and mushroom picking. The fitness stairs near Lummeniemi-Leirikeskus, built in 2019, are 160 metres long; impressive views open up from the top. These specific facilities offer different reasons to spend time outdoors, from the nature trail to a sporting round.

The Shores of Lake Keitele and Vanha Kirkkosaari

Vanha Kirkkosaari is a large, almost entirely undeveloped island in the immediate vicinity of the centre of Viitasaari and Road 4. The shelter known as Kirkkosaaren laavu is on the southern shore. The Hiekkalahti shelter on the island has a woodshed, a toilet and a landing place. If ice conditions allow, ski trails are laid around the island and also through its interior in winter.

There is a shelter with a fire pit on the shore of Lake Keitele at Paniaisniemi. Hiekan uimala offers a different kind of lakeside experience: it has a sandy beach, a swimming area bounded by walkways, and a diving tower on a separate floating platform. Each of these places offers its own kind of experience, so choose your accommodation based on the activities that matter to you during your stay rather than assuming they are all part of a single offering.

Winter Activities and Culture

Sahis Ski Centre has three downhill runs, a platter lift and a conveyor-belt lift for beginners. Together with the ski trails on Vanha Kirkkosaari, which depend on ice conditions, this provides a range of winter activities. When planning your trip, check which of these options suit the kind of stay you have in mind.

One aspect of Viitasaari’s cultural life is the Metsätyömuseo on Savivuori. Its buildings, arranged in a staggered layout, form a complex that can be viewed from the outside all year round. The interiors have separate opening hours in summer. Viitasaaren Elokuvaviikko is a Finnish film festival held at the youth centre theatre at Koulukuja 8; it takes place in spring, in March and April.

Nature Destinations Nearby

Heinä-Suvanto is a protected wetland for birds in the Viitasaari area and is of regional, national and international importance. A marked nature trail leads to a bird tower. When water levels are high, for example in spring, waterproof boots with high shafts are needed on the marked trails. Firewood is available in a woodshed by the fire pit, and there is also a toilet.

At Koljatti, a marked trail leads to a shelter and a fire pit at the foot of a sheer rock face. Signs from the Blue Road direct you to the parking area and the starting point of the nature trail. The final gravel stretch, about two kilometres long, can be difficult to drive in winter and during the spring thaw—a useful point to bear in mind when adding the visit to your route.
