Suolahti offers a range of ways to shape your trip: the Keitele Museum focuses on the heritage of rail travel, while the lakeshores, hiking route and ice trails invite you to enjoy outdoor activities. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether culture and railway history, or time by the lake and on the trails, will play a bigger part in your trip.

Railway history and distinctive buildings

The Keitele Museum is a working specialist museum that preserves the heritage of rail travel in the Keitele lake district and the Suolahti region. Visitors can try a handcar on the museum grounds. The Lättähattu railcar can be hired for private trips; the museum also runs train trips on request. These offerings bring railway history to life in different ways: as preserved history, through hands-on exploration and on a trip arranged to order.

Another glimpse into railway history can be found at Suolahden Wanha Asema. The station building was completed in 1898 to plans by architect Bruno Granholm, when rail traffic began. The complex includes tracks, warehouses, an engine shed and railway workers’ homes. Together with the harbour, it forms a historically valuable transport and cultural heritage ensemble that has retained much of its original character. The grounds are also home to “Lastaajat”, a 1982 bronze sculpture by Tapio Junno.

Suolahti Church also reflects a different period of architecture: it was completed in 1940 and represents late functionalism. The church museum of Äänekosken seurakunta is located in the basement. Exhibits include local church history, objects, photographs and liturgical vestments. A painting in the church depicts Suojärvi and Kirppuvuori. Visitors interested in architecture, local history or church objects will each find a distinct way to explore Suolahti’s culture here.

Lakeshores, fire pits and trails

The shores of Lake Keitele in Suolahti continue to serve as recreational and residential areas. The Kukkulanmäki recreation area has a fire pit overlooking the lake. You can reach it by car via Kukkulantie or by taking the fitness stairs up from Satamaraitti. These two access routes give you different options for fitting a visit into your day. The fire pit itself is also intended for outdoor recreation.

If you’d rather plan a longer walk, consider the Metsoreitti Suolahti–Laukaa. It starts in Suolahti at Hotel Äänekoski and is 11 km one way. The trail leads to the Haapala lean-to shelter, where you can make a fire. This gives the walk a specific destination; the distance is a useful guide when coordinating your planned activities with your stay in Suolahti.

Suolahti on the ice

The Suolahden jääladut on Lake Keitele include a 6 km ice trail in one direction. It runs between Suolahti harbour, Korpisaari and Kovala. On Suojärvi, another ice trail forms a 5 km loop across the lake. The different route types make it easy to choose: a trail with a stated one-way distance, or a loop across the lake. There is parking for the ice trail at the Suojärvi swimming area. The Suolahden jääladut network also includes a fire pit at Honkapohjan Majaniemi.

A holiday apartment in Suolahti is a good option if you want to plan your stay around the activities described here.
