Olustvere combines manor culture with hands-on craft experiences. The town is therefore particularly interesting if you would like to get to know Estonia not only through its landscapes, but also through its buildings, materials, and traditional ways of working.

The Manor Complex and Avenues as Defining Impressions

The manor complex in Olustvere still includes 27 buildings, including barns, sheds, and cellars. Olustvere Manor is one of the most completely preserved manor complexes in Estonia. The main building, which served as the summer residence of the Fersen family, was completed in 1903. It is known as Olustvere Castle and is considered one of the finest examples of the Heimat style in Estonia.

The approach roads are also part of the town’s distinctive appearance: the roads leading to Olustvere are lined with avenues of linden, oak, and maple trees. Together, these avenues are about 8 kilometres long. Those interested in historic estates, architecture, and established townscapes will find concrete starting points here for planning their own trip.

Experience Glass, Bread, Wood, and Ceramics for Yourself

At the Olustvere Klaasikoda, visitors can take part in glass workshops by prior registration and view changing and permanent exhibitions. Under the guidance of a master, you can blow a glass bubble and use it to form a small vase or a hanging glass sphere. This makes the visit not only an exhibition experience, but also an opportunity to get to know glassmaking first-hand.

The Olustvere Leivakoda showcases another side of traditional crafts. Its permanent exhibition follows the journey from grain to freshly baked bread. By prior registration, participants can shape their own flatbread there and watch it being baked in a traditional bread oven. At the Olustvere Puidukoda, various woodworking workshops are available. There is also an exhibition of old wooden products, objects, wood samples, and historic woodworking tools.

The Olustvere Keraamikakoda also offers various workshops in which visitors can shape clay with their own hands. At the Olustvere Meekoda, you can also make candles from beeswax foundation sheets. For a trip with children of different ages, these activities offer a range of ways to take part: watching, getting to know the materials, or creating something yourself. You should factor prior registration into your plans for the glass and bread workshops; horse riding at Olustvere Mõis is possible by prior arrangement.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?

A holiday apartment or holiday house in Olustvere is a suitable option to look for if manor culture and hands-on discovery are to shape your trip. First decide whether historic architecture, glass, bread, wood, ceramics, or an additional horse-riding experience should be the focus. This way, you choose your accommodation not only based on the place name, but also on the character of the days you would like to spend in Olustvere.

If you would like to compare other places in addition to Olustvere, you can also look at Tääksi, Taevere and Kobruvere. With its manor complex, avenues, exhibitions, and workshops, Olustvere itself offers an unusually tangible connection between history and trying things out for yourself.
