Karula combines protected landscapes, varied trails and regional cultural history. Those planning a trip with nature experiences and active days will find a range of options here: the Peräjärve Forest Study Trail leads through several forest types, while the Rebäse Landscape Trail passes through historic farm landscapes. The Karula Cycling Route runs for over 50 kilometres through hilly terrain and along several forest roads. The nature experience is complemented by lakes, water activities and interesting cultural sites.

Protected Landscape and Nature Experiences

The Karula Pikkjärve Protected Landscape Area serves to preserve the landscape of Karula Pikkjärv and its surroundings, as well as the habitat type of nutrient-rich natural lakes. Karula küla is also part of the Karula Pikkjärve Protected Landscape Area. Karula National Park offers opportunities to relax and enjoy nature at different times of the year. One other aspect is important for travel planning: there are no grocery stores in Karula National Park. When choosing a holiday apartment or other accommodation, you should therefore consciously take catering into account in your preparations.

Hiking Trails for Different Discoveries

The Peräjärve Forest Study Trail leads through several forest types, making different forest landscapes the focus of a dedicated tour. The long Karula Hiking Trail is designed as a signposted circular route through Karula National Park, but has no marked starting or finishing point. Along the way, there are three information boards, two landing stages, a boardwalk and a wooden bridge. These specific stops give the hike different focal points without requiring you to commit to just one type of nature experience.

The Ähijärve Trail is 4 km long and is suitable as a clearly defined route for day planning. The 7-kilometre-long Rebäse Landscape Trail offers another perspective. It passes through historic farm landscapes, past a farm first mentioned in 1586, and continues to Linnamägi Hill. Traces of settlement from the Early Iron Age have been preserved there. Those who want to combine landscape and history while hiking will therefore find several distinct points of interest along this trail.

Cycling and Water Around Karula

The Karula Cycling Route is a 50 km trail through Karula’s hilly landscape and along several forest roads. The long Karula Cycling Route has four information boards.

In the immediate surroundings of Karula, Lake Ähijärv offers opportunities for boating and swimming. Children can also be active and explore nature on the children’s trail at Lake Ähijärv, which is likewise nearby. This allows days of exercise, water activities and nature observation to be organised in different ways. The children’s trail and the 4 km Ähijärve Trail should be regarded as separate offerings.

Cultural History and Cultural Sites

There are further cultural points of interest away from the trails. Karula Church has been operating in a converted manor granary since 1997. Karula Church contains the stained-glass window “Eucharist” by Estonian artist Dolores Hoffmann. The old Karula Church also preserves several stone works typical of the 15th century, including a stone with two human figures known as the “Karula noorpaar”.

The Lüllemäe Cultural Centre was opened in 1927 as a community hall in a renovated tavern. This enabled the local theatre group to rehearse year-round. This historical connection adds a cultural dimension to the landscape experiences and makes Karula interesting for travellers who want to combine days in nature with regional history and local culture.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Karula, you can first consider which experiences should define your trip. For a hiking-focused itinerary, the different types of trails provide useful guidance: the forest landscapes at Peräjärve, the circular route in Karula National Park, the 4 km Ähijärve Trail or the 7-kilometre Rebäse Landscape Trail each offer a different focus. Those who prefer covering longer distances by bicycle can make the 50 km Karula Cycling Route the centrepiece of their trip. Water activities, the children’s trail at Lake Ähijärv and the cultural sites in the immediate surroundings complement this selection. This allows you to choose your accommodation according to the desired character of your trip rather than just a single excursion destination.
