Turja is a small coastal village on the Turja-Siiksaare Peninsula. A deeply indented coastline, the harbor, a bathing spot and distinctive landforms shape the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay by the sea, you can choose Turja based on whether you want to combine the coast, nature, local traditions and shared experiences.

Coastal Landscape Between the Sea, Forest and Uplands

Turja’s coast features diverse landscapes: reed beds, juniper heaths, areas covered with rocks and forests alternate with one another. The highest point in the village is Turja mägi. This hill begins at the edge of the Kalli bog and extends through Turja to the sea. As a result, in addition to its coastal setting, the village also has a distinctly varied inland landscape.

Other distinctive landforms complement this setting. Paoraun is an elongated hill covered with large stones. Surnumägi lies on the border between Turja and Siiksaare and forms a natural, long gravel ridge that apparently represents a former coastline.

Harbor, Bathing Spot and Time Together

The harbor is an important place for experiences in Turja. The sandy landing area at the harbor serves as a bathing spot. People from Turja, the neighboring villages, Valjala and more distant places swim there. The harbor also has a functioning fish kitchen and a playground. The infrastructure there makes it possible to enjoy leisure time together with the family and combines time by the water with a relaxed stay in the village.

The harbor is also connected to the local fishing tradition through its cuisine. At the harbor concert on August 4, 2026, the local community sold fish that had been smoked, fried or prepared as soup. Such specific impressions can help you decide whether Turja is suitable for a trip in which regional cuisine and life around a harbor play a role.

Experience Nature and Cycle Along the Trails

The Laidevahe Nature Reserve includes the Turja restricted zone and extends as far as Turja. Cycling is permitted on the trails within the reserve. For planning your day, this offers a choice between spending time at the bathing spot, taking in the coastal landscape and exploring by bicycle.

If you are looking for accommodation that suits different daily rhythms, Turja can therefore be explored through several interests: one day can be devoted to the harbor and the water, and another to the landscape or local traditions. The surrounding area does not offer a uniform backdrop, but rather a succession of coastal landforms, uplands and protected natural areas.

Fishing Events and Local Traditions

At Saaremaa’s Open Fishing Harbors Day in 2022, the program at Turja Harbor included a fish filleting workshop as well as sea-related activities for children. These program items are part of the harbor’s event history and should be understood as past examples when planning a trip, not as a promise of a current event date.

At the summer solstice, the harbor association in Turja organizes a village festival with a bonfire. At one edition of the village festival, around 150 people attended over the course of the evening. At the harbor concert on August 4, 2026, songs, accordion music and the MariAnnid women’s choir were part of the local cultural program. For families and other travel groups, this creates an impression of Turja that extends beyond the landscape and swimming to include community events and fishing culture.

Legends Surrounding Turja mägi

Turja is also associated with historical and orally transmitted stories. An old traditional healing stone once stood on Turja mägi, where sick people sought help and brought money or other objects. The site is no longer visited today. According to local tradition, Turja is also home to the grave of a Swedish king.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Turja, you can therefore first determine your preferred travel style: coast and bathing spot, harbor and fishing culture, nature and cycling, or landscapes and traditional stories. If you would like to compare several places for your trip, you can also take a look at Kungla, Kalli and Sakla.
