Sutu combines a distinctive coastal landscape with a long sandy beach and traces of a far-reaching history. Those who want to combine nature, water and historical themes during their holiday will find several different starting points here for planning their trip.

Water, Beach and Coastal Landscape

The Sutu lahe hoiuala protected area safeguards sandy and muddy shallow-water areas, small islands and skerries, as well as coastal meadows. This landscape gives Sutu its special character: coastal formations, open stretches of water and low-lying shore areas shape the impression more strongly than a densely built-up environment. The main ditch Kuusiku and the Ristioja flow into Sutu laht and are therefore part of the water-shaped landscape.

For a stay by the water, Sutu rand is the main attraction. The beach is long, and the water becomes deeper there relatively gradually. Sutu rand is also appreciated for its particularly warm water. Sutu rand is the only official, maintained and marked sea-sand beach in the entire region. This makes it possible to experience the destination both through its coastal landscape and through a clearly defined beach experience.

Practical Orientation for Your Stay

There is a car park at Sutu rand where even a large bus can turn around. This is a concrete reference point for planning your arrival. Sutu rand, Püha Church and the cemeteries in Püha are also part of this landscape. Those who would like to consider cultural topics alongside the water can therefore include these names in their further travel planning, without limiting Sutu to a purely beach-focused stay.

Historic Traces at Sutu laht

Sutu also offers access to regional history. In 2004 and 2005, small-scale archaeological fieldwork was carried out in the area of the former village of Sutu at Sutu laht. The work investigated a suspected harbour site dating from the late Iron Age or the early Middle Ages. The cautious classification as a suspected harbour site is part of this historical topic and makes clear that Sutu's history is told not only through present-day landscapes but also through earlier uses of the shore.

Maps from the 17th and 18th centuries provide another historical point of reference. On them, the suspected landing place of Sutu, the site of Pia Manor and Püha Church were connected by a straight route approximately 2.5 km long; parts of this route still exist today.

Choose Accommodation to Match Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Sutu, you can first determine the character you want for your stay. Should the holiday be shaped primarily by the long sandy beach and the water, or would you like to give equal consideration to the landscape and history? Base your choice of accommodation on this focus and on your daily itinerary. Families with different interests can decide in advance whether beach time, observing nature or historical topics should provide the central theme. Sutu offers more than one perspective without committing the trip to a single type of holiday.
