Vana-Vigala combines nature experiences with a multifaceted manor history. A marked walking trail, protected park landscapes, exceptional avenues and cultural-historical sites give a stay different points of focus. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Vana-Vigala can choose their accommodation based on whether their trip is to focus more on short walks, longer hiking routes, observing the landscape or historical discoveries.

Walking Trail and Protected Park

The Vana-Vigala nature trail is a 1.5 km marked walking route in the old manor park. It therefore provides a clearly defined route for a stay that combines physical activity with the surroundings of the former manor. The former park of Vigala Manor in Vana-Vigala covers 9 hectares and is now protected as a nature reserve. Its former function as a park and its current protected status are among the distinctive features of the landscape.

The Hirvepark also expands the nature theme with a special location: the Hirvepark campfire site is situated on Jakobi Island in the protected Vana-Vigala Hirvepark. The route layout in the park is also of interest when planning a trip. There, the cycling route was moved from the hiking trail to the country road because of the very soft surface. Those travelling by bicycle should take this special feature into account when making their own plans.

Long Routes and Distinctive Avenues

For longer hiking plans, there is the 84 km RMK hiking trail Penijõe-Aegviidu-Kauksi, also known as Penijõe-Varbola. The nature trail and this long-distance hiking route therefore represent different ways of experiencing Vana-Vigala: a short walk can be compared with a more extensive interest in hiking without equating the two options.

A distinctive landscape is created by several avenues of larches stretching for kilometres along the roads leading through Vana-Vigala. They are considered unique in Estonia. Estonia’s first larch planting was also established in Vana-Vigala’s deer park. The deer park, the Hirveaed in the Vigala forest park, was completed in 1795. Those choosing accommodation for a trip with a strong interest in landscapes and routes will therefore find an unusual reason to choose this location.

Manor History and Special Cultural Sites

The earliest known references to Vana-Vigala Manor date from 1426. Further traces of the area’s history can be found at the Vana-Vigala ohvrihiis, which has been under heritage protection since 1998. On the opposite side of the river, across from the ohvrihiis, stands Vigala Sass’s “loitsukivi”. Both names mark independent cultural points of reference in the surrounding area.

The historical character also includes the Pompeii bas-reliefs at Vana-Vigala Manor. They are described as Estonia’s oldest works of art. This wording remains closely associated with the bas-reliefs and makes clear that Vana-Vigala can be experienced not only through nature trails but also through unusual examples of art and manor history.

The Right Accommodation for Your Trip Planning

A holiday apartment in Vana-Vigala is particularly suitable as a starting point if you want to combine nature and culture during your stay. For a more relaxed day plan, the 1.5 km nature trail can be a focus in its own right; those who prefer longer distances can include the 84 km RMK hiking trail in their personal plans. Other travellers may be more interested in the larch avenues, the deer park or the historic sites around the manor.
