Ridala is a destination for travellers who want to combine their holiday with impressive traces of the past. At its centre is Ridala Church, with its distinctive architecture and historic churchyard. In addition, there is Ridala Tubrilinn, also known as Tubrimägi, a heavily damaged hillfort site with archaeological finds. Those considering a holiday apartment in Ridala when planning their trip can therefore get to know the place from a particularly cultural and historical perspective.

Ridala Church and its Medieval Features

Ridala Church is one of the older and architecturally distinctive sacred buildings in western Estonia. Its walls were decorated with secco paintings in the 14th century. Today, it is Estonia’s only church in which a rood screen has been preserved. The western main portal also holds a special position: it is considered one of the finest and most distinctive portals in Estonia.

The churchyard of Ridala Church contains gravestones from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as old stone crosses. Three medieval crosses are partially buried in the ground; they may be so-called penitential crosses. For visitors interested in church art, historic cemeteries and stone evidence of past eras, the churchyard therefore offers several different points of interest.

Churchyard, Cemeteries and Landscape Area

Ridala’s new cemetery is also part of the cultural history of the place. It is protected by the state as a cultural monument. Ridala’s new and old cemeteries, as well as the surroundings of Ridala Church, lie within the Ridala Landscape Area, a landscape area of county-wide significance. Thus, sacred architecture, historic graves and the Ridala Landscape Area come together in one place.

This combination is suitable for travel planning at different paces: you can take time for the church and its details, examine the churchyard attentively and then place further historical traces in the surrounding area into context. The visit thus remains clearly focused on culture and history, without reducing Ridala to a single building.

Ridala Tubrilinn and Archaeological Finds

Another historical trace is Ridala Tubrilinn, also known as Tubrimägi. The heavily damaged hillfort site is located in Läänemaa, on the territory of the village of Saanika, approximately one kilometre from Ridala Church. The precise name and state of preservation are part of this site’s character and should be taken into account when planning a trip.

During the excavations of 2024, a granite oven with an open cooking hearth was uncovered at Ridala Tubrilinn. In addition, radiocarbon analysis of charred material from a building produced a calibrated result of AD 1168–1269. Thus, Tubrilinn’s archaeological findings stand alongside the church and cemetery history of Ridala.
