Discover Käsmu: Coastal Trails, Erratic Boulders and Maritime History
Accommodation in Käsmu
Käsmu brings together coastal landscapes, unusual erratic boulders and maritime history within a compact area of interest. Anyone planning a trip to Estonia can choose between longer routes by the sea, a shorter nature trail and insights into the history of seafaring. When looking for a holiday apartment in Käsmu, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm: Should the accommodation primarily serve as a base for active days, or as a starting point for cultural discoveries and shared excursions?
Hiking trails between the coast, forest and erratic boulders
The Käsmu hiking trail is 15 km long, with 10 km running directly along the coast. The route leads to Palganee and Käsmu Lake before returning to the village along a forest path. Along the way are the granite erratic boulders Meremunk and Metsamunk. This information helps with planning a day without reducing the route to a specific walking time or level of difficulty.
A shorter option is Käsmu’s 4.2 km nature and cultural history trail. It begins at the Käsmu cemetery and chapel and passes through Estonia’s largest concentration of erratic boulders, which extends over more than 400 ha. The Käsmu boulder field is Estonia’s largest boulder field and can be visited from the nature trail. Particularly striking is the Eremiit erratic boulder, also known as Matsikivi, with a circumference of 14.7 m and a height of 4.7 m.
The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle. Including the section to Cape Palganeem and back, the Käsmu cycling route is 16 km long in total. The cycling route offers views of the sea from Cape Palganeem. This gives you different ways to explore the area: a longer hike with coastal and forest sections, a compact nature trail or a bike ride with sea views.
Maritime history and distinctive village scenery
The Käsmu Maritime Museum has been housed since 1993 in a border guard building dating from the tsarist era. The exhibitions cover seafaring, fishing and smuggling. At the same time, the sea is considered as part of nature and as a subject of photography and visual art. The museum organises museum days for children on the themes of the captain’s village and the Viking Age, and also offers an orienteering programme called “Aardejaht”.
The history of the village also includes the Käsmu maritime school, which existed from 1884 to 1931. The Käsmu lighthouse was built in 1892. The wooden chapel was built in 1863 with money from the villagers and houses one of Estonia’s oldest organs. The cemetery also contains a grave monument for Signe, the daughter of Captain Tiedemann. Near Käsmu stands a cast-iron generals’ chapel, built in 1846 in memory of General Nikolai von Dellingshausen.
The village itself also contributes to Käsmu’s distinctive character: white captains’ houses and tall flagpoles shape the appearance of the village. Those wishing to combine nature and culture can mentally link a route featuring the museum, historical traces and distinctive buildings to different parts of the day, without committing to just one way of travelling.
The right holiday apartment for your travel plans
When searching for accommodation, you can tailor your choice to your priorities. For active days, there are the 15 km hiking trail, the 16 km cycling route and the 4.2 km nature trail. For culture-focused excursions, the Maritime Museum, the maritime school as a historical subject, the lighthouse, the chapel and the grave monuments offer different points of interest.
If you are travelling with children, the museum days on the captain’s village and the Viking Age, as well as the “Aardejaht” orienteering programme, can provide special highlights. For a more relaxed day, the local history, white captains’ houses and erratic boulders offer discoveries to enjoy at your own pace. When looking for a holiday apartment in Käsmu, therefore, compare above all which of these experiences should shape your trip and how you would like to combine active, maritime and cultural-history days.
