Between Manor History and River Floodplains

Puurmani combines a distinctive manor history with the protected Puurmani Manor Park and the floodplains of the Pedja River. Puurmani Manor Park is a protected park and one of the village’s defining places. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Puurmani can therefore shape their stay around both historical discoveries and experiences in nature. For families or travel groups with different interests, flexible day planning is a good option: while some may want to learn more about the manor and its past, others can explore the floodplain landscape.

Puurmani Manor House and Its History

Puurmani Manor was chosen as the site for forming Julius Kuperjanov’s partisan battalion. The decisive factors were that the front line ran immediately east of Puurmani and that the place was close to Tartu. During the formation of Julius Kuperjanov’s partisan unit, more than several hundred men gathered at the manor house in Puurmani. These events give the manor house a historical significance that extends beyond its architecture.

On 21 December 1923, a school was ceremonially opened at Puurmani Manor House. The Puurmani Mõisakool is currently housed there. The white main building of the manor complex is also a reason to take a closer look: it was built in 1881 during the time of G. J. von Manteuffel in the Neo-Renaissance style. Thus, architectural history, local history and the manor house’s present-day use come together in Puurmani.

Visiting Days and Guided Tours

Puurmani Manor House and its history can be visited on summer visiting days as part of the “Unustatud mõisad” project. Outside these summer visiting days, guided tours of the manor house and Puurmani Manor Park are possible by prior arrangement. A guided tour of Puurmani Manor includes the countess’s boudoir, a secret door to the tower, the count’s study and the treasury. If you would like to plan your stay around such a visit, arranging it in advance is part of the specific planning.

Nature on the Kirna Nature Trail

The Kirna Nature Trail is 6.8 km long and offers the opportunity to explore the floodplains of the Pedja River and the floodplain forest. Its exact length is especially helpful for planning the day if you would also like to allow time for a longer experience in nature alongside your visit to the manor house. The nature trail has a different focus from the historic rooms: instead of architecture and the past, the focus is on river floodplains and floodplain forest.

The manor park can also be combined with time by the water. After swimming in the adjacent reservoir, you can take a walk through the nearby Puurmani Manor Park. This allows for different ways of discovering Puurmani without having to combine its history, park and river landscape into a single experience.

The Right Accommodation for Planning Your Trip

When looking for accommodation in Puurmani, you can focus on the aspects of your stay that matter most to you. Those who prefer historic places and guided visits should take the summer visiting days or a guided tour by prior arrangement into account. For days spent in nature, the 6.8 km-long Kirna Nature Trail, the floodplains of the Pedja and the floodplain forest are important points of reference. If water and parkland are to be part of your plans, the adjacent reservoir offers another option for shaping the day. A holiday apartment in Puurmani is therefore particularly appealing if you are not simply looking for an overnight stay, but want to get to know the place through its history, landscape and various ways of visiting it.
