Vaivara combines the landscape of the Sinimäed with impressive memorial sites and a multifaceted local history. The Vaivara Landscape Protection Area encompasses the Sinimäed, also known as the Blue Hills. At the same time, the site of the Battle of Sinimäe during the Second World War is designated as a historical monument and extends across the settlement of Sinimäe and the village of Vaivara. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Vaivara will therefore find a travel destination where nature and history stand closely side by side.

History on Trails and in the Museum

A special way to explore the past is the “Time Travel 1944” experience at the Vaivara-Sinimäed Museum. It begins at the museum after prior booking. For your travel planning, this experience can be a fixed part of your itinerary if you would like to learn about the events of 1944 not only at individual memorial sites, but through an experience specifically designed for this purpose.

The Vaivara History Trail also leads through the Sinimäed. The circular route is up to 8 kilometres long and can be walked with a guide after prior registration through the Sinimäe Museum. In addition, a section of the RMK Penijõe-Aegviidu-Kauksi hiking trail runs through the Sinimäed. This allows you to combine different ways of exploring the area: You can specifically plan the History Trail with a guide or include a section of the longer hiking trail in your travel plans. The mix of museum visits, memorial sites and trail experiences you prefer may be a deciding factor when searching for suitable accommodation in Vaivara.

Memorial Sites in the Sinimäed

Several sites commemorate the history of the fighting. The Vaivara Monument to the Estonian War of Independence in Sinimäe commemorates local people who fell in the Estonian War of Independence from 1918 to 1920. The Sinimäed Battlefield Memorial includes a 12-metre-high steel cross with a symbolic composition depicting an explosion, as well as an authentic, lined section of trench and a cleaned original trench line.

A memorial field was built on the western ridge and slope of Grenaderimägi between 1997 and 2000 according to designs by architect Tiit Kaljundi. The various forms of remembrance give a stay in Vaivara a clear historical dimension. For families and other travel groups, it may be interesting not simply to visit the sites individually, but to decide in advance whether a guided trail, the museum or quieter reflection at the memorials should be the main focus.

Old Cemetery and Vaivara Church

The local history also includes the old Vaivara cemetery and Vaivara Church. The cemetery was established at the end of the 18th century and was no longer used after the Second World War. More extensive restoration began in 1986; by 2000, a memorial wall had been erected there. The wall bears stone plaques commemorating various military units, individual soldiers who fell, holders of the Cross of Liberty associated with the Vaivara parish, and distinguished people from Vaivara.

Vaivara Church was built in 1776 and destroyed during the fighting of the Second World War. Together with the old cemetery, it broadens the view of Vaivara to include an older, locally rooted history. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore decide in advance whether you would like to focus on the Sinimäed and its trails or on the historic landmarks in the village. As additional local destinations, you can also include Laagna and Perjatsi in your travel plans.
