Discover Suurpea on Hara Bay
Accommodation in Suurpea
Suurpea combines the landscapes of Lahemaa National Park with the coast of Hara Bay and an unusual military history. This Estonian coastal village is therefore an appealing base for travelers who want not only to admire nature but also to learn about the history of a special place. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Suurpea, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on coastal landscapes, hiking, historical topics, or a mixture of these.
Coast and national park as defining landscapes
Suurpea is located in Lahemaa National Park and is a coastal village on the shore of Hara Bay. The national park protects forest, wetland, and coastal ecosystems. This combination of different landscapes defines the character of the area: Hara Bay represents the village’s maritime connection, while the national park preserves the larger natural environment with its forests, wetlands, and coastal habitats.
The coast here is part of the area’s history and of the routes through the surrounding countryside. For a family trip, it can be helpful to distinguish during the planning stage between a nature experience, a historical discovery, or a combination of both interests.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The Hara lahe õpperada nature trail is 3.3 km long and leads from Suurpea to Pähkneeme. It is one of the three coastal nature trails on the Pärispea Peninsula. The trails introduce the sea and coastal habitats and are suitable for hiking.
Another option is the Suurpea Loop. This military history trail is about 2 km long and presents the history of the coastal village. Compared with the 3.3 km-long nature trail, it is the shorter of the two route options described and has a different focus: rather than presenting the sea and coastal habitats, it focuses on Suurpea’s military past. Families who want to combine different interests can consider these two thematic directions separately when planning their trip.
Suurpea’s former military town
The village includes the former Suurpea military settlement with four residential buildings. It was built in the second half of the 1950s. The military heritage extends beyond the settlement: The Suurpea military town, together with Hara Harbor on the other side of the bay and the laboratory buildings, as well as the Institute for the Demagnetization of Ships located a few kilometers away, formed the Navy’s 1st test site.
These connections give the place a historical dimension that distinguishes it from an ordinary coastal stay. Suurpea’s military heritage is regarded as valuable for Lahemaa, Estonia, and Europe.
