Borre: Nature and Hiking Experiences at Møns Klint

Anyone choosing Borre for a trip filled with nature, activity and distinctive landscapes can plan their excursions at exactly the pace they prefer. Møns Klint combines a striking coastal landscape with several hiking options: seven marked trails lead for between 2.2 and 9 kilometres through the surrounding area. For a longer tour, Klintekongens Rige is an ideal choice: a 14-kilometre hiking route through Klinteskoven, Liselund’s romantic garden and Møns Klint.

Hiking Trails between Forest, Cliffs and Beach

There is also a specific option for less extensive days of hiking. In Klinteskoven, an easy 5.4-kilometre route follows the forest paths and offers a detour to Aborrebjerg. It is suitable for beginners and less experienced hikers. Those who want to combine the heights with the beach will find five stairways along the route between Liselund in the north and Møns Fyr in the south. They provide access from the cliff-top path to the beach below. This means the choice of route can be adapted to different ideas of how to spend a holiday day, without every hike having to be the same length.

The white cliffs of Møns Klint rise up to 128 metres above the turquoise-green sea and stretch along a seven-kilometre coastline. Dronningestolen is the name of a viewpoint at the highest cliff outlook in Klinteskoven. From there, the cliff drops almost vertically 128 metres to the beach. The beach offers good opportunities for fossil hunting, where remains of sea urchins and belemnites, among others, can be found. The coast is a chalk landscape formed by glaciotectonic processes during the Weichselian glaciation.

Nature Experiences and Historical Sites

In Klinteskoven, forest and distinctive plant life come together. The calcareous soil supports several species of wild-growing orchids. Most of the forest is designated as natural forest and is managed in an environmentally sensitive way for the benefit of birds, fungi and insects. Klinteskoven is also a public forest. In the soft, rounded valley of Jydelejet lies a cultivated heathland, maintained through cattle grazing and the removal of unwanted trees and shrubs. The chalk soil lying close beneath the surface provides favourable growing conditions for several orchid species, including the fly orchid, the white helleborine and the red helleborine.

There is also much to discover in terms of cultural history. Timmesøbjerg is a hilltop refuge fortress near Møns Klint. Traces from the Bronze Age and Iron Age have been found there; Timmesøbjerg is also included on the list of Denmark’s 100 most beautiful prehistoric monuments. Liselund Slotspark is considered Denmark’s best-preserved romantic garden complex. The grounds tell the story of its founder, Antoine de la Calmette, and his beloved wife, Lisa.

Excursions to Suit Your Travel Plans

For families with different interests, the GeoCenter Møns Klint can be a programme highlight in its own right. Built into the cliff, it is designed as an exciting journey 70 million years back in time. The GeoCenter is accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Its facilities include an accessible toilet, accessible parking spaces, a baby-changing station, and free loans of wheelchairs and pushchairs. Those travelling by bicycle can use a rest area, drinking water and a bicycle pump there during Borre Church’s opening hours.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Borre, you can therefore consider whether short walks in the forest, a longer hike, fossil hunting on the beach, or historic gardens and fortifications should be the main focus. A combined cycling and hiking trail through Klinteskoven connects Camping Møns Klint with the GeoCenter.
