Discover Glumsø: Lakeside Paths, Nature and Culture

Glumsø combines a varied landscape with unusual cultural attractions. At Glumsø Lake, paths lead through nature and to the birdlife, while the Dansk Cykel & Knallert Museum offers a special insight into the world of Danish two-wheelers. There are also Glumsø Church, a historic church path and the Stendyssen. Depending on whether you would rather plan a waterside walk, nature observations or a day at the museum for your stay, different priorities may influence your choice of holiday apartment or holiday home.

Lake, Forest and Paths around Glumsø

Glumsø Lake is a convenient starting point for a stay with plenty of outdoor activity. Along the paths by the lake, you can experience the water, the surrounding nature and the birdlife. The Hjertestien circular route around Glumsø Lake is approximately 3.8 kilometres long and easy to walk. The Hjertestien can also be used for most of the year by cyclists, wheelchair users and users of electric scooters. This means that the circuit of the lake can be included as an activity in its own right when planning the day.

The landscape itself also makes Glumsø interesting. Glumsø Forest was established together with the associated nature area in 2004–2005. The forest consists mainly of deciduous trees interspersed with conifers. Open landscapes with nutrient-poor grassland, meadows, a lake and marshland surround the wooded areas. Those who appreciate varied landscapes on holiday will therefore find more here than just a single walking path.

In 2017, the town gained a six-metre-long freshwater beach at Glumsø Lake. There is a bathing jetty at the beach, from which visitors can jump into the water. This area adds another direct connection with the water to the lakeside paths, without requiring the entire day to depend on a longer hike.

Church, Stone Burial Site and Two-Wheeler History

Glumsø Church is a nave church with a Romanesque central section and is also a wayside church. It is therefore one of the town's cultural points of interest. From Glumsø, the Stendyssen can be reached in a westerly direction via the old church path; from there, there is an unobstructed view of the stone burial site. For a stay with an interest in history, this path can be treated as a separate activity alongside the natural experiences at the lake.

A special attraction is the Dansk Cykel & Knallert Museum. It has a unique collection of vehicles from the world of Danish two-wheelers, including many specialist bicycles and very rare mopeds. The exhibitions cover an excerpt from the history of bicycles and its consequences. In recent years, particular emphasis has been placed on sports and racing bicycles, as well as on the environment and health benefits of cycling. There are also normally numerous unusual bicycles and vehicles that both younger and older children can try out. This means that a museum day can appeal to different age groups without everyone having to share the same interests.

Getting There and Choosing a Suitable Location

Regional trains on the railway line between Nykøbing Falster and Copenhagen stop at Glumsø station. From there, you can continue towards Ringsted or Næstved station, the next stations on the line. If you are arriving by train or planning excursions without driving the entire way, the station is a useful point of reference when searching for accommodation. For other travel plans, however, proximity to your preferred day-trip destinations may be more important. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, therefore, consider which focus suits your stay: lakeside paths and forest, cultural history or the museum's unusual vehicles.
