Ejby Mose: Boardwalks, water and birdlife

Ejby Mose originally formed through the silting-up of a larger lake area. After the Ejby Kildeplads water-extraction site in Ejby Mose was closed in 2017, the water level rose, benefiting wildlife, particularly birdlife. A defining experience is the 250 m-long boardwalk. At its end, there is a platform on the lake with two benches and a view.

The approximately 700 m-long path to the boardwalk begins to the right of the KFUM Scout site at Præstemarksvej 16, 4623 Lille Skensved. If the path is not muddy, the boardwalk can be reached with an all-terrain wheelchair. This condition should be taken into account when planning the day if you are travelling with people who have different mobility needs. At the nature campsite by Ejby Mose, it is possible to spend the night in a shelter. In the immediate vicinity of the destination, Ejby Sø campsite also has a shelter for around eight overnight guests, a toilet, drinking water and an outdoor washing area.

Ejby Church and traces of local history

Ejby Church is a medieval church with a Romanesque nave dating from around 1150–1200 and a Gothic extension to the east. The building is constructed from green sandstone quarried at Lellinge. Inside the church is a baptismal font dating from around 1300, made of Gotlandic limestone and engraved with figures of apostles and saints. The altarpiece was painted in 1596 and is designed in the canopy style with catechism panels.

The tympana on the south and north walls are particularly unusual: they depict Christ as Judge of the World and a lindworm, respectively. The lindworm relief is considered unique in Romanesque stone sculpture in Zealand. The local history surrounding the former mill can also be discovered in several places. At Ellens Plads, the millstone from Ejby Mill serves as a tabletop beside a bench. Ellens Plads is named after Møller-Ellen, who, together with her husband Møller-Jens, was among the last owners of the mill at Dalbyvej 71. A historic millstone from Ejby Mill has been returned to its original location.

For cyclists, the “Køge Ås tour” passes Ejby Church, among other places. Another way to travel together is the pilgrimage walk between Ejby Church and Bjæverskov Church, followed by lunch at the parish hall in Bjæverskov.
