Holbæk Municipality combines signposted paths, landscapes shaped by the Ice Age, historic places and vibrant cultural activities. This is particularly evident along Fjordstien: two stages lie within the municipality and both begin in Holbæk, namely Dragerup–Mårsø and Dragerup–Ågerup.

Paths and landscape

The stage from Dragerup to Mårsø leads through the town of Holbæk, along the waterfront promenade and past the old harbour of Holbæk. Fjordstien is marked with blue cycle-route signs as Route 40. In some places, it divides into a hiking trail and a cycle path; the hiking routes are signposted separately there. Beyond Holbæk Municipality, Fjordstien continues into the municipalities of Lejre and Roskilde.

Holbæk Fælled is also a public natural area of around 150 hectares in the municipality. Open grassland alternates with scattered woodland and ponds, complemented by diverse flora and fauna. Holbæk Fælled offers the opportunity to play disc golf, and the area provides space for cycling.

The area around Brorfelde Observatory features a unique Ice Age landscape designated as an area of national geological interest. Brorfelde Bakker has likewise been designated by the Ministry of the Environment as an area of national geological interest; this protects, maintains and communicates its geological values. The recreational area around Brorfelde Observatory is open to the public.

Guided tours at the observatory include the workshop, the domes and Discovery, Denmark’s largest telescope. The path to the domes and the paths to the playground and shelters at the observatory are accessible by wheelchair and with a pushchair. The hiking trails from Kirke Eskilstrup comprise 36.7 kilometres of marked paths with posts and signs.

History and culture

Holbæk Museum is located in the centre of Holbæk. Its collection comprises twelve buildings that form the heart of the old town. Eleven of the twelve authentic buildings still stand at their original locations, and some were already built around 1660. The exhibitions focus on the importance of the West Indies to West Zealand, the development of Holbæk and Knabstrup ceramics.

A little outside Holbæk, the Nyvang experience centre presents the history of Denmark from 1930 to 1959. History is brought to life there in, among other settings, a consumer cooperative, a dairy, a mission church, a village school, a smallholding, workshops and shops. Strandparken also combines walking with historic design: it features winding paths, old buildings, statues and small garden rooms. Strandparken is the only true historic park in Holbæk Municipality and was designed in the romantic garden style that came to Denmark from England at the end of the 19th century.

Holbæk Municipality has a professional theatre and several active amateur theatres. Various performances are offered throughout the theatre season. Holbæk Teater is a central venue for Sjællands Teater. Kystliv Holbæk places the local traditional coastal culture at the centre of its work.

Leisure

The swimming centre at Holbæk Sportsby has several pools, including an Olympic-size 50-metre pool, a family pool and a warm-water pool. The swimming centre is open to the public and offers swimming, aqua training, sauna facilities, water games and relaxation.

In the centre of Holbæk, there is a freely accessible skate park at Markedspladsen. Isrosen is a seasonal ice rink in Holbæk where visitors can go ice skating and try ice hockey.

Food and drink

The Nyvang experience centre includes Madam Blaa, where a traditional lunch with traditional dishes, cold drinks and cakes is served. Nyvang’s bakery and confectionery makes cakes baked with butter from Nyvang’s own dairy.
