Discover Jelling: Runestones, Trails and the Viking Age

Jelling combines important evidence of Danish history with trails, viewpoints and experiences for different kinds of day plans. At the centre are the Jelling Stones and the Jelling Monument: here, runic inscriptions, structures and the history of the Viking Age come together. Runestones and UNESCO World Heritage

For 1,000 years, the Jelling Stones have symbolised the founding of the Danish nation and Danish identity. The smaller Jelling Stone dates from around AD 950; it is the first place where the name Denmark appears within the country’s borders. The larger Jelling Stone records Harald Bluetooth’s claim to have conquered Denmark and Norway and Christianised the Danes.

The Jelling Monuments were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 as the first Danish site. The Jelling Monument consists of two mounds, the church, and the small and large runestones. At the same time, it is the oldest documentation of how and when the Danes were Christianised. For families, this place offers plenty to talk about, because history can be understood not only through dates but also through visible stones, mounds and inscriptions.

Monument area, ship setting and trails

The Jelling Monument area offers a viewpoint on the hill north of the church. Visitors can also follow the course of the 1,440-metre-long Jelling palisade along the white posts around the site. The Jelling ship setting is 356 metres long and consists of 500 stones. Those who prefer to explore a place step by step will find concrete lines and dimensions here to help orientate themselves during the walk.

The Jelling Monument area can be explored day and night throughout the year. For a longer hike, the entire Grejsdalstien trail can be completed on foot in approximately 3–5 hours. The Medieval Route from Jelling to Lunderskov can be completed by bicycle in approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes. Take these different formats into account when planning your trip if your group is interested in both short discoveries and an extended route.

The Viking Age and water-based activities

The Kongernes Jelling experience centre introduces children and adults to the Viking Age. It covers powerful structures, everyday life among the Vikings and the royal dynasty’s pursuit of power. An interactive journey leads from the battlefield across the Bifröst bridge to Valhalla. This allows you to complement a visit to the monument with a more narrative and interactive experience.

For a different kind of day, Jelling Outdoor Swimming Pool has a 25-metre pool with diving boards, a children’s pool, a toddlers’ pool and a small water slide. There is also beach volleyball, an inflatable jumping cushion and trampolines.

Jelling Church as part of the monument

Jelling Church was built around 1100 and is the fourth church at this location. It is a Romanesque church made of travertine, or spring limestone; a low west tower was added in the Late Middle Ages. This gives the monument area an additional perspective through a structure whose history spans several periods.
