Oksbøl Between Refugee History and Nature

The FLUGT Museum in Oksbøl tells the story of the largest influx of refugees Denmark has ever received. The permanent exhibition includes “Flygtningelejr Oksbøl”. An audio tour follows the original roads and paths of the former refugee camp, taking visitors back to 1946, when a refugee camp stood here in the Aal Plantation. Another perspective is offered by the walk “Historiske Vandringer – Danmarks største flygtningelejr, en gemt historie” in the Aal Plantation in Oksbøl, which passes a few surviving buildings from the former camp. The audio tour focuses on the former routes, while the walk highlights the surviving buildings. Another outdoor experience is a visit to the refugee cemetery.

Aal Church is also one of Oksbøl’s cultural attractions. The church contains some of Denmark’s largest Romanesque frescoes. The Romanesque frieze depicting a cavalry battle is often compared to the Bayeux Tapestry. At the Panser- & Artillerimuseum, visitors can see tanks and cannons up close. The permanent exhibition “Army Wheeled Vehicles” also lets visitors climb aboard an armoured personnel carrier.

At FLUGT, the theme of fleeing is also explored through food: the café serves dishes inspired by the food cultures that refugees from around the world have brought to Denmark. This connects the museum’s cultural history with a look at culinary influences that have become part of life in Denmark.

Water and Activities

SportsPark Blaavandshuk in Oksbøl offers heated pools, a sauna, an infrared sauna and hot tubs. The swimming and leisure pool complex also has tall, long water slides. Parkgolf Blåvandshuk has two loops, each with nine holes and a length of 500 metres. Junglefun offers climbing courses: its nine courses increase in difficulty.
