Blavand: Lighthouse, Coastal History and Nature Trails

Oksby Between Church and Local History

Oksby’s history can be seen in several special places. At the former site of Oksby Old Church, a gravel-laid outline marks the location and size of the former church. A bell recovered from a shipwreck is also located there. Both details bring the former church site to life, even though no surviving church stands before you.

Today’s Oksby Church is a Romanesque Revival church made of red brick. It was built in 1891 to replace Denmark’s last thatched church and preserves artefacts from the earlier building. These include the church ship “Briggen Marie-Daniel-Emilie” from 1829. A memorial at Oksby Cemetery also tells the story of the German sculptor Christoph Voll. During one stay, you can therefore discover various forms of cultural history: a former church site, a preserved church building and a personal memorial.
