Discover Tønder: Culture, History and Marshland

Tønder combines vibrant music with an unusually rich cultural history and the natural experience of the Tøndermarsken marshland. Musically, the Tønder Festival focuses on folk, roots rock, country, blues, Cajun, world music and related genres. It takes place every year on the last weekend in August. The festival site is located near the town centre and has eight stages, including a large open-air stage and the cosy Front Porch.

Museums Covering Lace, Design and Military History

Those who want to discover Tønder through its craft and everyday history will find traditional bobbin lace-making at Drøhse’s House, as well as small temporary exhibitions on local arts and crafts. The small museum is located in a well-preserved historic house in the heart of Tønder. The Baroque building was constructed in 1672; many original architectural details and high-quality craftsmanship have been preserved. Following extensive restoration work, Drøhse’s House received an award from Europa Nostra in 1985.

The Museum Cultural History Tønder displays, among other things, Tønder silver, a furniture collection, Tønder lace, Schleswig-Holstein faience and Dutch tiles. The 40-metre-high Water Tower offers panoramic views of the town and the marshland. The tower was built in 1902 and inaugurated as the Wegner Museum in 1995. The Hans J. Wegner exhibition is located there and includes selected iconic works such as the Peacock Chair and the Papa Bear Chair. The art museum in Tønder also presents Northern European art from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Another focus is the history of the former Zeppelin base. The Zeppelin & Garrison Museum Tønder has an extensive collection of photographs and objects from this period, including original airship propellers, uniforms and weapons. Groups can take approximately two-hour guided tours of the former Zeppelin site in Soldaterskoven. Advance booking of at least three weeks is required.

Historic Streets and Distinctive Townscapes

In the medieval town centre, the street layout and building pattern still convey the impression of a medieval structure. Green spaces dating from around 1800 enclose this town centre. The cobbled Uldgade stands out for its gabled houses and unusual bay windows. Tønder Kristkirke also tells part of the town’s history: it is known for historic epitaphs commissioned by wealthy citizens. Its pulpit dates from 1586; in addition, an early hymnal was published here in 1732.

At Slotsbanken, the foundations of the castle are marked by clipped beech hedges. The area is open to everyone and can be used for picnics and play. At the former town prisons, original cells have been preserved; graffiti carved into the panels by prisoners adds an unusual detail to this historic site. Tønder’s original quayside has been preserved in an underground exhibition at Tønder Havnefront.

Music, Trails and Marshland

Bachmanns Vandmølle, also known as Visemøllen, is a historic watermill in Tønder. It was originally built in 1598 as part of Tønder Castle and is used for musical events connected with the Tønder Festival. For a shorter exploration of the town, the Cirkelbroen, built in 2021 as part of the urban renewal programme, provides a distinctive feature: also known as the wooden promenade, the bridge creates a floating experience above Mølledammen.

For longer days combining nature and culture, the 54-kilometre Marskstien hiking trail leads through the nature and culture of the Tøndermarsken marshland and through Højer, Rudbøl, Tønder and Møgeltønder.
