Mommark between beach, sea and the Alsstien

Mommark combines coastal landscapes, maritime experiences and the special history of a ferry terminal on Sydals. The section of the Alsstien between Fynshav and Mommark offers views across the Little Belt towards Funen and Ærø. Along the way, fields, hedgerows, woodland and beach alternate. Those planning a trip can combine very different holiday experiences here: activity in the landscape, time by the water, regional cuisine and historical discoveries.

Beach and coast around Mommark

Mommark Beach is a sandy beach with a bathing jetty and Blue Flag at Mommark Marina. Visitors who are not staying at the campsite at Mommark Marina may also use the beach. This means that, regardless of the accommodation chosen, a stay in Mommark can include a day by the water. For families, it can be appealing to alternate time at the beach with a walk or a longer section of the Alsstien, without limiting the holiday to just one activity.

Paddling, fishing and marine nature

At Mommark Marina, visitors can rent six sea kayaks and four SUP boards. A paddling trip from Mommark offers the opportunity to experience marine nature and birdlife in a Natura 2000 area around the southern part of the holiday island of Als. This provides a different perspective on the coast, while the Alsstien allows visitors to experience the landscape from land.

Fishing is also one of the possible activities: fishing is permitted south of Mommark, where the water is deep close to the coast. The vessel “Rasmus”, a former lobster trawler used mainly for fishing trips, is also based in Mommark. Depending on your interests, you can therefore focus your stay more on paddling, observing nature or fishing.

Smoked specialities and regional cuisine

M|M Seaside Bistro offers homemade dishes and house-smoked specialities with a view of the sea. The cuisine includes house-smoked specialities from its own smokehouse as well as fresh fish dishes. The “Smagen af Mommark” selection includes smoked salmon in various versions, smoked pork fillet, matured bacon from Grambogård Dyrevelfærds-gris and deli salads. Such regional flavours can provide a culinary complement to a day by the water or on the coastal path.

Historical traces at the ferry terminal

Mommark’s ferry terminal enjoyed its heyday as the terminus of the Sønderborg–Mommark railway from 1933 to 1962. The ferry connection from Mommark to Søby on Ærø was discontinued in 2009. These two dates belong to different chapters of the town’s history and make the ferry terminal an interesting destination for visitors who, alongside the beach and nature, would also like to learn about Mommark’s former significance as a transport hub.

A special event highlight is the Mommark Havnefest. It includes four days of entertainment as well as food and drinks; visitors can also watch the 72-hour pole-sitting event. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, you should check the relevant event information separately, as no general date is provided here.

Mommark as a starting point for your accommodation search

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Mommark, it is worth deciding on your preferred travel rhythm first. The landscape along the Alsstien lends itself to days of walking and changing natural scenery, while the beach, kayaking, SUP and fishing focus on the water. Those who would like to include regional cuisine and local history can add the bistro, the ferry terminal and the local offerings described above to their selection. This allows you to choose suitable accommodation based on the experiences you want to shape your trip, without reducing the area to just one type of holiday.
