Sønder Stenderup between forest, coast and culture

Sønder Stenderup combines varied woodland landscapes with coastal views, traces of early history and special nature experiences. The Stenderupskovene forests lie on high coastal slopes and offer views of Fænø, Fænø Kalv and Kolding Fjord. Forest paths and wide-ranging views

There are five signposted circular walking routes in Nørreskov, Midtskov and Sønderskov. The routes are each 3 to 7 kilometres long and take approximately 30 to 90 minutes. This range makes it easier to plan your day if you want to combine short walks with longer circuits. Another option is the cultural and historical route through the Stenderupskovene. The new hiking route is 6.2 kilometres long and passes numerous prehistoric monuments. The routes in the Stenderupskovene are also connected to the Vandvejen cycle route.

Nature also displays different facets in the forests. The Stenderupskovene consist of mixed deciduous woodland with especially many mature beech trees. Oaks more than 500 years old are also part of the woodland landscape. Lyngmosen, an old, partly overgrown raised bog designated as a natural forest without forestry management, lies in Sønderskoven. A pair of cranes bred there in recent years; tree frogs and an older pair of white-tailed eagles are also found there. In the vicinity of Sønder Stenderup, Solkær Enge was restored to nature in 2004 after many years of drainage and agricultural use. Today, the area is a shallow brackish-water lake with abundant birdlife.

Bus route 254 runs from Kolding bus station to Sdr. Stenderup. From there, the Stenderupskovene are approximately 3 kilometres away on foot. In Sdr. The Hvidbjerg sand is also exposed there; this layer of sand was deposited more than 22 million years ago.

Coast, snorkelling areas and waterside spots

Løverodde beach has a bathing jetty and a natural playground. There is also a coastal stone reef created for snorkelling. The Løverodde stone reef, also known as Bondens rev, consists of 16 piles of stones. They extend from the very shallow water near the coast to a depth of 4 metres. For a trip with different interests, this stretch of coast can therefore be combined with walks and visits to historical sites, without equating the individual experiences.

Stenderup Hage is a shallow snorkelling area that is also suitable for beginners. There are dense stands of seagrass and other algae at Stenderup Hage. At Stenderup Strand, you will find a nature shelter, a fire shelter, shelters and a kayak launch area. Sønder Stenderup Sønderskov has a kayak rest area with access to a shelter, a composting toilet and a fire pit with a grill grate. These specific spots can play a role in planning your day by the water.

Cultural history between church and megalithic tomb

Sønder Stenderup Church consists of a Romanesque nave and chancel with an apse, as well as a Late Gothic tower. The oldest parts of Sdr. Stenderup Church probably date from the late 12th century. A porch was probably built in connection with a major renovation in 1869. Those interested in older architectural history can complement a visit to the church with the prehistoric monuments in the surrounding area.

Langdyssen is a 21-metre-long and 10-metre-wide megalithic tomb from the Neolithic period with two burial chambers. It was built around 3200 BC. Skansen is the remains of an early medieval fortification north of Stenderupstrand. Around 50 known burial mounds and dolmens are recorded in the Stenderupskovene surrounding the protected area. This creates a destination where nature trails and history lead directly to different ideas for days out.
