Sjølund: Nature, Trails and History around Skamlingsbanken
Sjølund is an interesting starting point for anyone who wants to combine landscapes, outdoor activities and Danish history. Skamlingsbanken, the highest point in Southern Jutland, is located nearby. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the landscape and the Little Belt. The protected area was shaped by a glacier during the last Ice Age and is now characterised by diverse nature, large open grazing areas and nutrient-poor grassland.
Hiking with views and short discovery trails
For an active day on holiday, the Udsigtsruten trail at Skamlingsbanken, which runs through the area around Sjølund, is an excellent choice. It leads from Højskamlingen to Bjerget and offers a 360-degree view of the Little Belt and the landscape south of Kolding. If you prefer a more compact hike, you can choose the 1.5-kilometre Højskamling route. Five information stations along the way provide interesting facts about the history, landscape and nature of Skamlingsbanken.
The Picnic-cirkel at Skamlingsbanken also offers something different. It invites you to take a picnic break, play and learn about how glaciers shaped the landscape 18,000 years ago. The path from the car park to the Picnic-cirkel is easily accessible via a firm gravel path. This means that, depending on your plans for the day, the visit can be a short break or a small excursion into nature and knowledge.
Visitor centre, café and local history
The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Centre near Sjølund tells the story of four forces through digital experiences: nature, the place, speech and assembly. The building is built into the hillside and features a large window overlooking the Little Belt. At Café Skau, you can enjoy light meals, refreshments, coffee and cake. Skamlingsbanken Restaurant is located 150 metres from the Skamlingsbanken visitor centre and serves food and drinks.
Skamlingsbanken was an important meeting place in Danish history. In Sjølund itself, the Sjølund Mølle feed mill is a reminder of the area's industrial past. It dates from 1868 and was rebuilt in 1963 after a fire. Vejstrup Church is also located in Sjølund. Another historical connection is the former railway line: from 1911 to 1948, Sjølund was a station on the Kolding Sydbaner railway, on the Kolding–Hejlsminde route.
Plan active days on your own terms
If you would like to combine different interests during your holiday, Sjølund offers further opportunities for exercise and spending time together. Sjølund's disc golf course has nine baskets. It is open to everyone at weekends and on weekdays outside school and SFO hours: from 5 pm Monday to Thursday and from 4 pm on Fridays. The outdoor fitness facilities allow you to train using your own body weight and do resistance training with magnetic weights.
The Madpakkehus at Sjølund-Hejls School can be used by visitors outside the usual school hours. Sjølund Multiarena can be rented by private individuals and companies. This means that when choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, the most important consideration is which combination of nature, culture, short activities and planned excursions suits your stay. This allows you to combine peaceful experiences in the landscape around Skamlingsbanken with local history and sporting activities in Sjølund, without limiting your holiday to a single activity.
