Holiday apartments in Vesthimmerland: UNESCO culture, nature and cycling routes
Vesthimmerland combines impressive cultural history with distinctive landscapes, nature experiences and routes for active days. Between museums, historic sites, lakes and striking coastal formations, numerous different impressions lie close together. Cyclists will also find named routes and connections here, while places such as the Limfjordsmuseet, the Stenaldercenter Ertebølle and Herregården Hessel make history accessible in an engaging way.
Culture and history
The Viking fortress of Aggersborg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the same time, it is the largest of Harald Bluetooth’s five ring fortresses. In Ertebølle, the Stenaldercenter combines historical themes with activities in which visitors can try out Stone Age practices: these include archery, travelling in a dugout canoe, searching for traces of wild animals, making cordage from bast and nettles, painting with Stone Age pigments and grinding grain. The Stenaldercenter Ertebølle is located only a few hundred metres from the archaeological site of Ertebølle Køkkenmøddingen.
The Vesthimmerlands Museum in Aars presents archaeological finds, widely renowned silverwork and changing exhibitions. The new exhibition building has a floor plan in the shape of Thor’s hammer. At the museum, visitors can explore 13,000 years of cultural history. The Jensen Museum in Farsø focuses on literature, providing insights into the life and work of Johannes V. Jensen and Thit Jensen. The “Arbejdets Rum” exhibition displays objects from Johannes V. Jensen’s study, while the Thit Jensen exhibition is based on objects and stories from Thit Jensen’s life.
Herregården Hessel is one of Denmark’s last four-winged, thatched manor houses. Throughout the year, the estate is brought to life through crafts, household tasks, old traditions and exhibitions. As part of the educational programme, children put on historical clothing, are given different names and carry out appropriate period- and season-specific craft and work tasks in groups.
On Livø, visitors can learn about the history of the isolation facility for men that operated there from 1911 to 1961. The Vesthimmerlands Museum offers guided tours on Livø lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours; individual visitor programmes can also be arranged. The island is home to heathland, species-rich pastures, old oak forests and a diverse range of wildlife.
Nature and landscape
Ertebølle Hoved is a particularly scenic area with 20-metre-high cliffs of moler and volcanic ash layers from the Tertiary period. The beach lies below Ertebølle Hoved. The landscape around Vilsted Sø has a different character: covering 450 hectares, it is the largest freshwater lake in North Jutland. Numerous breeding and migratory birds live by the lake; the bird tower and the bridge offer good opportunities for birdwatching.
The circular route around Vilsted Sø is 20 km long. The bridge also provides access to a northern loop of approximately 12 km and a southern loop of approximately 10.5 km. In the nature areas of Vesthimmerland, there are 19 shelter sites that visitors can use freely for an overnight stay outdoors or a break during a hike. Uhrehøje Plantation has a nature base, a shelter site, an accessible toilet, covered seating areas and a picnic shelter.
Naturekspeditionen runs nature events and educational programmes throughout Vesthimmerland using a minibus and various trailers loaded with equipment. In addition to independent stays in the countryside, the area therefore also offers organised nature and learning activities. The various facilities and routes range from short stays at an equipped nature site to longer circuits around the lake.
Water, culinary experiences and regional routes
The Limfjordsmuseet is located between the Limfjord and the Frederik VII Canal and offers guided boat tours on the Frederik VII Canal. The museum also includes Snapseri, where locally specific herbal schnapps are produced using Aalborg BASIS and tastings are offered.
The cycling network also has its own distinctive features. Along the Planetstien, bronze planet models stand on bronze mounts mounted on solid concrete pillars; an information sign is located next to each model. Vilstedruten is a 36 km cycling route between Rønbjerg, Ajstrup and Sebbersundkloster. Near Rønbjerg, it connects with the regional Ertebølleruten 36 and the national Limfjordsruten 12 cycling routes.
