Skyum between Fjord, Beach and the Bronze Age

Skyum combines the peaceful landscape of Thy with beaches, the Limfjord and an unusually dense heritage of Bronze Age history. Those who want to combine nature experiences with cultural discoveries will find various opportunities here for a varied stay. Skyum Stone and the Path along the Shore

A notable destination is the Skyum Stone. The erratic boulder consists of pegmatitic granite with large, light flesh-coloured potassium feldspar crystals as well as plagioclase and quartz. Its dimensions make it a special natural monument: The stone measures 4.2 m × 2.7 m, is 2 m high and weighs up to 60 tonnes.

The visit can be combined with a walk along the water. From the car park at Bjergvej 6 in Skyum, a path of approximately 500 m leads to the beach. From there, continue for a further approximately 500 m along the shore to the south until you reach the Skyum Stone. The approximate distances provide a useful basis for planning your day, without implying any specific walking time. At Skyum Østerstrand, the bathing water was classified as “excellent” in 2021—the best bathing-water quality a bathing site can achieve.

Fjord, Playground and Walks

The Limfjord can be reached from the centre of Skyum in ten minutes on foot. Skyum Østerstrand also has a communal recreational area with a small playground, ball-game courts, a pétanque court, a bathing jetty, a fire pit and a public toilet. The artistically designed wooden playground is considered something of a landmark of Skyum and can be a striking stop for families during a day at the beach.

From Skyum Østerstrand, you can walk along the beach northwards towards Skyum Bjerge or southwards towards Gudnæs Strand. Wellington boots are required for these routes at high tide. This means that the beach offers not just a single destination, but also an opportunity to adapt your outing according to the water level and the direction you prefer.

Hills and Traces of the Early Bronze Age

Skyum Bjerge is a hilly natural area with many burial mounds from the Early Bronze Age. At the site “Gravhøje i Skyum Bjerge”, 17 burial mounds have been preserved. For visitors who enjoy exploring landscape and history together, this offers a different focus from the beach: The impression is shaped not by a single structure, but by the combination of the terrain and its archaeological past.

The National Museum also preserves finds from one of the ploughed-over burial mounds near Skyum. They include two burial cists, an urn, a sword, a dagger, an arm ring and a pin with a bow-shaped head. All these objects are made of bronze and date from the Early Bronze Age. In addition, a spiral ring made of thin gold wire from one of the burial cists has been preserved. Such details give the landscape of Skyum Bjerge a tangible historical dimension and also make the area interesting for travellers who want to see more than just nature on an outing.

Skyum Church as a Cultural Stop

The cultural side of the area includes the village church of Skyum Kirke in Thy, which has been in use for 800 years. Its exterior walls feature ashlar masonry reliefs: A face is depicted on the north side, while lions can be seen on the south side. The two different motifs invite you to take a careful look at the church from the outside during a walk through the village and add another historical accent to your stay in Skyum.
