Holiday apartment in Rebild between heathland, lakes and culture
Rebild combines hilly heathland with lakes, ancient forests, marked hiking trails and a remarkable cultural history. Rebild Bakker, Rold Skov and the museums represent nature experiences, historic sites and living traditions.
Nature
Rebild Bakker is a hilly heathland landscape with steep inclines, beautiful viewpoints, springs and streams. The Rebild Bakker Route is 10.8 km long. Gnarled beech trees stand in Troldeskoven, the oldest of which are more than 300 years old. The Jyske Skovhave showcases another side of the forest: more than 150 different species of trees and shrubs grow there. In 1970, Denmark’s first official dog forest was also established here.
The protected Store Blåkilde spring should be viewed from the shore. Its almost oval spring basin measures approximately 12 metres at its widest point and is 4 to 5 metres deep. At Madum Sø, there is a marked circular route around the lake. Access is from a car park overlooking the water; a footpath also leads to Langmosen. During bird migration, ospreys may visit Madum Sø and feed there on pike and perch.
Lakes, trails and winter
There are two bathing beaches and a bathing jetty at Store Økssø. A marked 1,570-metre swimming course is also available there. Another route around the lake is 2.7 km long and suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and similar use.
The Røverruten is a 5.1 km route certified by the German Hiking Institute as a Premium Easy Hiking Route. Five large wooden figures accompany the trail; they are inspired by the history and legends of the forest. The 11.8 km Gravlev Ådal Route connects REGAN Vest, Rebildcentret and the Thingbæk Limestone Mines with Gravlev Sø and Rebild Bakker. It is certified by the German Hiking Institute as a Premium Hiking Route.
The Gravlev Ådal Route also includes the 76-metre-long Skillingbro Undervejsbro suspension bridge. It connects the area around the Cold War Museum REGAN Vest and the Thingbæk Limestone Mines with the landscape around Gravlev Sø and in Rebild Bakker. When there is sufficient snow, Rold Skov has a two-part cross-country ski trail: a 13 km section between Skørping and Rebild and a 2.3 km training trail south of Skørping School.
Culture and history
The Rebild Museum presents an exhibition about Danish emigration to America from 1850 to 1920. The museum also has a large folk music collection featuring instruments, dances, songs and folk music. Traditional dancing has taken place there on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 p.m. since 1951; Gammeldans is still held every Sunday.
The Rebild Festival has been a Danish-American tradition since 1912. Every year around 4 July, Danes, Americans, Danish-American guests and other visitors gather in Rebild Bakker for a day of celebrations with speeches, music, community and cultural performances.
The Cold War Museum REGAN Vest preserves a fully furnished Cold War bunker covering 5,500 m² with its original interior completely intact. The bunker can only be visited as part of pre-booked guided tours. A 700 m² exhibition about the Cold War is accessible at Rebildcentret. The Thingbæk Limestone Mines contain sculptures by Anders Bundgaard and Carl Johan Bonnesen. Rebildcentret also has exhibitions about the two sculptors, limestone, the region’s springs and the Cold War, including information about the local Cold War bunker REGAN Vest.
Rebildcentret has an accessible access route from the car park to the reception building, as well as paths between the exhibition buildings and the limestone mines. RebildPorten is the tourist information office and visitor centre of Rebild Municipality.
