Discover Vester Jølby: Landscape, Coast and Cultural Heritage
Vester Jølby combines a distinctive landscape with rural cultural history and a variety of paths. The village lies on a tongue-shaped moraine formation created by glaciers during the Ice Age. To the southeast and northwest, areas of seabed that has become dry border this formation. As a result, different landscapes meet in and around Vester Jølby, making it an exciting starting point for a trip in which nature and culture are equally prominent.
Moraine Hills, Fjord Landscape and Jølby Nor
From the northwestern slopes near Vester Jølby, there are views of Skyum Bjerge, Vildsund and Rovvig. The flat foreland of Rovvig consists of seabed from the Stone Age that has become dry, complementing the higher-lying moraine area with a distinctly different landscape. Reeds, extensively grazed meadows and a plantation shape the scenery around Jølby Nor. This natural setting provides the basis for a diverse range of plant and animal life.
The Kr. Koldsvej between Vester Jølby and Dragstrup provides a good point of orientation: from there, you can look out over the grazed meadows and reed beds at Jølby Nor. At the pumping station where Lyngbro Bæk flows into the fjord, another aspect of the surrounding landscape comes into view. There, beach meadows and a bay lie in front of bushes and reed beds. At Dragstrup Vig, the coast is narrow and predominantly rocky; behind it are beach meadows and coastal heaths, bounded inland by coastal protection dikes.
Hiking with Different Focuses
Those who would like to explore the surrounding area on foot will find several different options. A locally signposted hiking trail around Jølby Nor includes, among other things, the old church path across Lyngbro Bæk from Dragstrup Church to Vester Jølby. The route thus combines landscape and local history without limiting the hike to a single natural feature.
For longer hikes, the Kystruten Mors is divided into ten approximately equal stages. The Mors coastal route also leads from the end of Fjordkær through the forest to the beach meadows at Dragstrup Vig and then continues along the water. When the water level is low, part of the “Vestermarken” circular route can be walked along the coast starting from the sports grounds in Rovvig. When planning your day, therefore, take into account both the desired route length and the conditions at the water’s edge.
Village History and Special Cultural Sites
Vester Jølby is laid out as a winding road village. Freestanding farms are integrated into the village structure alongside detached houses, vividly illustrating the rural character of the place. Near Rovvig are small, landless houses dating from the 19th century. They were originally inhabited by day laborers and fishermen; together, they form a remarkable ensemble.
The Romanesque Dragstrup Church is located nearby; it was built in the 12th or 13th century near a holy spring. It is the only church on Mors to have preserved frescoes dating from around 1480. The area around Dragstrup also contains the Maria-Magdalene kilden, a circular, stone-lined and now dry well with an upper diameter of approximately 1.10 m, as well as Kobbervold, a square castle site with traces of a perimeter rampart. Both places add historical discoveries to the landscape experience.
Mose-konen offers a contemporary, craft-oriented aspect. The workshop is listed at Fjordkær 134 in Vester Jølby, 7950 Erslev. Made-to-order special glass products are produced there, including adaptations of children’s drawings in glass.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Vester Jølby, it is worth first deciding on the rhythm you want for your trip. Should the journey focus mainly on walks around Jølby Nor, coastal stretches and landscape views, or are village history, church art and special cultural sites the main priorities? The surrounding area offers points of interest for both preferences.
