Erslev offers a variety of discoveries: a path connects the lime kiln with the former limestone quarry, the church combines Romanesque and Late Gothic features, and Dukkeskolen displays model cars alongside hands-on activities. There are also sculptures and gallery art. You can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most—from landscape and industrial history to art and design.

Valley Landscape and Traces of Limestone Quarrying

Erslev lies at the upper edge of the valley along Lyngbro Bæk. From there, you can access the lower-lying pastures in the valley. The former Erslev limestone quarry is now a nature area under extensive grazing. Here, the landscape and its former use are linked: the quarry is no longer an active extraction site but is used as a nature area.

A “Spor i landskabet” trail connects Erslev Kalkovn with Erslev Kalkgrav. This creates a described route between two places associated with the history of limestone. The lime kiln was built around 1930. If you are interested in the landscape and its industrial history, you will find a different focus here than in the town’s collections and galleries. Erslev Kalkovn is west of Erslev Church.

Church Architecture and Industrial History

Erslev Church has a Romanesque nave and a Romanesque chancel with a lead roof, as well as a Late Gothic porch. The nave and chancel are different parts of a church building; in Erslev, both have Romanesque features. The porch adds a Late Gothic accent. Together with the lime kiln built around 1930, the church illustrates the variety of architectural themes in Erslev: sacred architecture stands alongside a structure associated with the history of limestone.

You can give these two interests different weight when planning your visit. If you are primarily interested in historic buildings, the church and lime kiln are specific places to explore. For the landscape, there is also the limestone quarry.

Model Cars and Making Things Yourself

Dukkeskolen displays more than 2,500 model cars in various scales. The collection offers a clear look at miniature vehicles in different proportions. There are also workshops and classes where participants can make their own dolls. These are two different ways to take part: viewing an extensive model collection and doing a guided hands-on activity. If you would like to plan your stay around a class, check the specific dates in advance.

Sculptures and Gallery Art

At Røntveds, the sculpture garden features handmade sculptures in granite, bronze, glass and ceramics. Small paths wind between trees and plants, past the artworks. Admission includes a cup of coffee and a slice of cake; as seasonal conditions may change, check this offer before your visit.

Galleri Bork exhibits a wide range of works: sculptures, paintings, gouache, watercolours, woodcuts and ceramics. The gallery also offers summer courses. The art offerings differ from the landscape and architectural history, as well as from each other: the sculpture garden features three-dimensional works among greenery, while Galleri Bork presents several artistic forms. If you plan to attend a summer course, check the specific dates.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for holiday accommodation in Erslev, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: the history of limestone and the valley landscape, church architecture, model cars, doll-making or visual art. The route between the lime kiln and the limestone quarry offers a specific connection to the landscape; courses and seasonal offers, on the other hand, require you to check the relevant dates or conditions. This lets you tailor your plans to your interests without treating the different offerings as interchangeable.
