Discover Bunken: Dunes, Beaches and Nature Experiences

Bunken combines an impressive dune landscape with forest, open natural areas and the coast. The Bunken Klitplantage is particularly characteristic of the area, situated between the Skagerrak coast and the Kattegat coast. Covering 1,171 hectares, it offers plenty of space for a variety of holiday activities: You can hike through the forest and dune landscape, plan a visit to the beach or follow the traces of regional history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Bunken will find a place where nature experiences shape the character of the trip.

Dune Landscape Around Råbjerg Mile

Råbjerg Mile is Denmark’s largest migrating dune and forms part of the Bunken Klitplantage. Its dimensions make it an impressive destination: The dune is approximately 1,000 metres across in every direction, contains around 3.5 million cubic metres of sand and reaches a height of up to 40 metres. These figures are particularly easy to appreciate on site, where the open sandy landscape dominates the view and clearly contrasts with the forest of the dune plantation.

For active days, the marked North Sea Trail is a good option. It runs through the open natural landscape west of Råbjerg Mile and through the Bunken Klitplantage. At Milevejen, the North Sea Trail has drinking water and a basic overnight accommodation site. Another option is the Blue Route, which passes the Flagbakken viewpoint. This allows you to tailor your excursions to the type of landscape you want to experience: Råbjerg Mile represents wide-open dunes, while the paths through the dune plantation connect forest and open areas.

Beach, Water and Sheltered Spots

Bunken Beach can be reached from the car park via an approximately 150-metre footpath through the dune heath. There are sheltered spots between the dunes. The beach is also designated as a bathing-point beach. The car-free beach of Hulsig–Bunken is nearby. This range of beach options can play a role in planning your day if you want to choose between a bathing point, a sheltered spot in the dune landscape and a car-free stretch of coast.

There is also a historical feature beneath the water’s surface: The shipwreck Cronborg lies in the nearby waters in front of the campsite. The naval frigate sank there in 1780. On land, the Ålbækbugt Battery near Fårebakke in the Bunken Klitplantage commemorates the history of the Second World War. The former defensive installation comprises 13 concrete bunkers. A cultural and historical excursion therefore adds another theme to days spent in nature and at the beach.

Paths and Starting Points for Your Holiday

Bunken Trinbræt is a stop on the Skagensbanen, local railway line 79 between Frederikshavn and Skagen. It is also considered a good starting point for walks in the Bunken Klitplantage. When planning your trip, this stop can therefore be particularly interesting if you want to explore the paths and landscape of the dune plantation. Nature, beaches and historical destinations can be considered as different themes for your holiday activities.

Travellers with dogs will also find a special destination: Døde Skov in the Kirstens Rende area is a 44-hectare off-leash dog forest where dogs are welcome without a leash. Bunken therefore offers families and mixed travel groups various ways to organise their holiday without focusing on the same thing every day. You can include a hike, a stay at the beach, a viewpoint or a historical discovery in your daily plans.
