Holiday Apartment in Brønderslev – Nature, Culture and History
Brønderslev combines impressive landscapes with a remarkable density of museums, historic sites and special experiences. Between the Jyske Ås ridge, marshlands, forests and cultural institutions, North Jutland presents a diverse picture that encompasses nature observation as well as regional history, art and living traditions.
Nature
Jyske Ås is a ridge formed by glacial processes during the last Ice Age. It is more than two kilometres wide and stretches for 38 kilometres from Dronninglund to Østervrå. Fields, heathland, marshes and forests shape the varied landscape, which is also home to a rich diversity of animal and plant life.
The landscape also includes Dronninglund Storskov, covering an area of 961 hectares. Store Vildmose is a protected, 450-hectare remnant of a former raised bog that was once considered Europe's largest raised bog. A rich variety of birdlife can be observed there, including from a Naturstyrelsen observation tower on Manna Mosevej.
At Sømosen there is a car park, a circular trail, and tables and benches for a picnic break. A walk around Øster Møllesø offers beautiful views across the water.
Trails
Marked hiking and cycling routes run across Jyske Ås, and there are also primitive campsites. You can hike and cycle in Dronninglund Storskov as well. A marked horse-riding route complements the network of trails; anyone wishing to use it needs a riding map. A total of ten marked nature and interpretation trails are distributed throughout Brønderslev Municipality.
Store Vildmose can be explored on foot and by bicycle. The area also includes the Vildmoseporten local and experience centre, which adds another place for learning about the bog landscape.
Culture
The Museum for Forsyning og Bæredygtighed is a state-recognised cultural history museum. It tells the story of life in Vildmosen and on Jyske Ås. Dorf Møllegård presents changing exhibitions on regional history and offers lectures, holiday activities for children and Hestedag, among other events, throughout the year.
Voergaard Castle combines historic rooms with impressive stories: the castle includes a dungeon, a moat and the story of the bloodstain that cannot be washed away. During the Medieval Days, merchants, impressive craftsmanship and fire pits bring the entire grounds of Voergaard Castle to life.
Dronninglund Kunstcenter offers changing art experiences, an appealing gallery shop and a small café. It is located in a beautiful natural area near Dronninglund Storskov. Hjallerup Mekaniske Museum presents the development of the mechanisation of agriculture and the arrival of industry in Denmark during the 20th century.
The Psykiatrihistorisk Museum takes visitors through history from the earliest prehistory via the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment to the era of state psychiatric healthcare and more recent times. Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel presents the history of Østvendsyssel from the Stone Age to the middle of the 20th century. Høstdagen is held there every year as an established tradition.
Experiences
Rhododendronparken contains more than 10,000 plants in 130 varieties. Numerous events take place every year at Runde Pavillon, including concerts and summer evenings with dancing. The park is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Another nature experience is offered by Eventyrstien in Dronninglund Nature Park: the trail is decorated with sculptures and offers audio experiences via QR codes.
The harbour of Asaa is now used mainly as a marina; from there, you can set off on fishing trips. Asaa Beach has flown the Blue Flag for many years. Those looking for a playful activity will find three smaller courses at Nygårdsminde Parkgolf, known as loops, each with nine holes.
Food and Drink
Nygårdsminde Vingård offers guided tours of the vineyards followed by wine tastings. The winery has 2,500 organically certified vines spread across two hectares. The range of excursion destinations therefore extends from historic collections and castles to regional winegrowing, without requiring nature and cultural experiences to be considered separately.
