Discover Aalborg: Culture, Nature and Family Experiences
Accommodation in Aalborg
Aalborg combines distinctive cultural attractions, maritime impressions and diverse experiences in nature. At Aalborg’s waterfront, the Utzon Center awaits you as a venue for visits and events focused on architecture, design and art. Exhibitions, conferences, meetings and culinary experiences are all part of its offerings, as is DEN KLODSEDE BY, where you can build your own architectural creations out of LEGO.
Culture, History and Creative Discoveries
The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg focuses on modern and contemporary art. Its collection comprises nearly 4,000 works and spans more than 100 years of art history. The building was designed by Alvar Aalto with the assistance of Elissa Aalto and Jean-Jacques Baruël. Wherever possible, most of the exhibition rooms use natural, indirect light, which is gently distributed throughout the building. This allows you to experience a museum visit from an architectural perspective as well.
Those who would like to learn more about Aalborg’s history will find several different ways to do so. The underground Gråbrødrekloster Museet lies three metres below Algade and tells the story of the Greyfriars Monastery, which stood there from its construction in the 1240s until its dissolution in 1530. At the Aalborg Historiske Museum, the presentation of the city’s history spans the period from around the year 750, when Aalborg emerged in connection with a trading site on the Østerå of that time, to its later development into a thriving industrial city. Springeren – Maritimt Oplevelsescenter combines a museum and an experience centre: you can enter a submarine and explore model ships relating to Aalborg’s maritime history.
The city’s present-day cultural life also offers a variety of highlights. Musikkens Hus is home to the Aalborg Symfoniorkester, which attracts international soloists and guest conductors to Aalborg. Nordkraft is a cultural and leisure centre created by converting a former power station. It includes, among other things, a theatre, two concert halls for rhythmic music, a cinema, exhibition facilities, an art school and extensive sports facilities. You can also discover Aalborg’s street art on a self-guided tour featuring more than 50 murals. For a culinary break, The Lighthouse, Aalborg’s first permanent street-food market, offers dishes from around the world.
Nature, Water and Trails around the City
Østerådalen Nord offers a nature experience in the immediate vicinity of Aalborg Centrum. The protected natural area covers around 100 hectares. Østerådalstien runs from Aalborg Centrum through Østerådalen Nord and South to Dall Møllevej near Svanemølleparken in Svenstrup. In some sections, the cycle and hiking trail follows the Hærvejen, a national and international cycling route. This allows you to plan your day with a stronger focus either on nature and outdoor activities or on the city’s cultural offerings.
Located on the Limfjord, Vestre Fjordpark covers 16.5 hectares. Its facilities include a Tarzan course in the water, a forest course with a zip line, a water playground, trampolines and a slide on the roof of the lifeguard building. There is also a rooftop playground with jumping equipment, a slide and a large net. The Egholm ferry connects Aalborg with Egholm; the crossing takes five minutes. From the top of Aalborgtårnet, you can enjoy views over Aalborg, the Limfjord and the landscape of North Jutland.
Family Experiences and the Right Base
At Aalborg Zoo, you can experience wildlife from around the world, learn more about the animals’ way of life and take part in activities for the whole family. Together with the offerings at Vestre Fjordpark, this creates a range of options for different day plans: museums, city history and street art on the one hand, and nature, water and wildlife experiences on the other. Before searching for a holiday apartment, therefore decide which priorities should shape your trip.
