Discover Stoholm
Stoholm between hiking trails, lake and local culture
Stoholm combines varied nature experiences with regional culture and good opportunities for active days during your holiday. In the surrounding area, you can explore Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal, with its lake, plantations, heathland and river valley. There is also a 30-kilometre hiking trail, a shorter trail at Birkesø, a signposted exercise route and various places where community life can be experienced.
This combination is suitable for planning a trip around different interests: you can schedule longer hikes, choose a shorter route, discover nature or combine your stay with culture and events. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Stoholm, the type of trip you want is therefore particularly important. Those who enjoy being on the move will find suitable options, as will travellers who want to combine excursions with local impressions.
Nature around Birkesø
The Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal area offers a varied landscape experience in the vicinity of Stoholm. Birkesø is a very nutrient-poor lake and is also known as a lobelia lake. The area is also part of the EU habitat area H 39. At the northern end of Birkesø, there is a sandy beach and a public bathing area. This means that a stay can include more than hiking and be complemented by time spent by the water.
A total of 2.5-kilometre hiking trail starts at the car park by Birkesø. The route offers a manageable alternative to the considerably longer Kalk Kaminoen. The 30-kilometre hiking trail runs between Stoholm and Skelhøje. Part of the Kalk Kaminoen follows the path “Sporet ved Smollerup Kirke”. Which route is right for you depends primarily on whether you prefer a shorter trail in the immediate area or an extended hike between two places.
Exercise and experiences for different daily itineraries
There are also opportunities within Stoholm to include exercise in your holiday day. Route 786 Stoholm Motionsrute is a signposted exercise route. The Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter also has a mountain-bike and skills track. If you are travelling with children, you can include the Blomsterbakken playground in your plans. It has a climbing and play tower with a slide and climbing net. Børneskoven also has an orienteering course created by Stoholm SFO.
When planning a day with several stops, you should consider the individual options separately: the long hiking trail, the shorter trail at Birkesø, the exercise route and the mountain-bike and skills track each represent different forms of active leisure. This allows you to adapt your excursions to the age, interests and preferred pace of your travelling group, without having to fit all the activities into a single day plan.
Church, exhibitions and community traditions
Stoholm Kirke is a striking example of modernist church architecture from the second half of the 20th century. It was built from 1969 to 1971 and inaugurated on 7 March 1971. The interior is characterised by the light entering through a large eastern gable window. Anyone interested in architecture can gain a concrete insight into the town’s more recent architectural history here, without the stay having to consist exclusively of nature experiences.
The local art and festival culture is also part of Stoholm’s character. Fjends Kunstforening organises an annual juried exhibition. The Forårsudstillingen is also open to exhibitors taking part for the first time, as well as amateur artists. The annual Stoholm Festuge takes place in Anlægget Park. The park is accessible via both Anlægsgade and Stadionvej; parking is also available there.
The Sankt Hansbål in Stoholm is a long-standing tradition. It includes a communal meal, a speech by the fire and damper bread baked on sticks on the meadow in front of the Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter. Such events give the trip a local connection alongside hikes and excursions. It is also historically interesting that the railway station in the municipality of Feldingbjerg was given the name Stoholm when the railway line between Viborg and Skive opened in 1864.
