Discover Ebeltoft: Culture, Harbour and Nature

Ebeltoft combines maritime history, vibrant culture and varied landscapes within a compact area rich in different themes. At Det Gamle Rådhus, an exhibition tells the history of the trading town from the Stone Age to the present day. At the harbour, a fishing harbour and an active marina meet; both are just a few steps from the town’s streets, shops and restaurants. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether you mainly want to plan museums and events, a harbour atmosphere, nature or active days.

Culture between glass, crafts and urban history

Glass art is a particular focus. Glas – Museet for glaskunst has a collection of more than 1,800 works of modern glass art from around the world. In the glassblowing studio and workshop, you can see traditional glass craftsmanship and hot-working techniques in practice. The museum also holds workshops and activities throughout the year, where children and adults can experiment with glass. This allows you to shape a cultural day in different ways: you can view artworks, observe craftsmanship or get hands-on yourself.

Maltfabrikken also has its own distinctive character. It was newly created and opened as Folkets Fabrik in 2020. Today, it is a place for art, culture, business and entrepreneurship. Kulturloft hosts music, lectures, artist talks, art in various styles and debates. Farvergården complements this cultural side with a historical speciality: it is the only preserved dye works in a trading town in Northern Europe. The garden extends to Strandvejen, and from the viewing hill there is, among other things, a view of Ebeltoft Vig and the frigate.

Harbour, frigate and special experiences

The frigate Jylland has been in Ebeltoft since 1960; the Danish fleet approved Ebeltoft as the frigate’s home port. Historic wooden ships and modern sports boats alike are welcome in Fregathavn. Guests can use toilets, showers and electricity at the south and east piers. Ebeltoft Havn also offers guest berths for boats up to 50 feet long and 4.5 metres wide. For visitors, Fregatten Jylland offers a trip on the largest dinghy, Robarkasse No. 1. It was formerly used to transport crew, coal and provisions. Activities with lively interpretation also give you the opportunity to learn more about the frigate’s history from a guide.

For a seasonal cultural evening, there is Jazz på Torvet. The event is a long-standing summer tradition in Ebeltoft: from the end of June to the end of August, free concerts take place every Saturday. During the main summer season from 28 June to 23 August, Ebeltoft’s night watchmen also begin their tours at 7 and 8 p.m. at Det Gamle Rådhus. The night watchmen are first mentioned towards the end of the 17th century. Depending on when you travel, you can therefore combine your accommodation search with a museum visit, a harbour tour or an evening event.

Landscape, water and routes for active days

Skelhøje offers panoramic views: westwards over Ebeltoft’s sea of rooftops to the Mols Bjerge with Trehøje, towards Helgenæs with the Dragsmur isthmus, southwards to Samsø and Tunø, and eastwards to the island of Hjelm in the Kattegat. In Ebeltoft Vig, the eastern part close to the town is designated as a wildlife reserve. The protected area serves year-round as a resting place for flocks of mute swans, mallards and gulls. These varied landscape impressions give you good reason to plan peaceful days in nature alongside culture and the harbour when choosing a holiday apartment.

For route planning, the Ebeltofter Kløverstier offer four routes totalling 27 kilometres around the town and through the surrounding landscape. The individual routes are 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 12 kilometres long. Those planning a longer tour in the region can include the Ebeltoft stage of the Mols Bjerge Trail. It begins at Østeralle 9 next to Ebeltoft Skole. One described option is to park in Ebeltoft, take bus 123 to Femmøller and then walk the stage back to your own car.

Sejlklubben Ebeltoft Vig is also open to everyone who would like to sail or go stand-up paddleboarding. Depending on your travel plans, you can switch between culture, water, observing nature and sporting activities. Ebeltoft is therefore suitable as a base for a trip where the same pace and focus are not required every day.
