Limestone extraction and geology around Hjerm

The Hjerm Limestone Quarry and mine lie on the southern edge of the town of Hjerm. Evidence of limestone extraction is known from 1770. The history of the site can therefore be told not only through buildings, but also through its geological use. A salt dome beneath the Hjerm Limestone Quarry has raised the Danish limestone by about 400 m. The quarry lies at the eastern end of a fault, along whose flanks Danish limestone lies close to the surface. These connections give the landscape a distinctive scientific and historical background, without requiring you to base your stay around a single activity.

Church, cheese and unusual details

Hjerm Vestre Kirke is dated to around 1140 and adds a historical destination to the area’s nature and mining history. For visitors who enjoy combining different themes while travelling, this creates a change between landscape, local history and regional culture. The limestone quarry also has a culinary presence: After around 20 weeks of maturation in the Hjerm Limestone Quarry, Rav-Osten developed new flavour nuances and a distinctly different consistency from the original cheese. The low temperature and high humidity in the Hjerm Limestone Quarry create special conditions for the development of Grubeost, a cheese matured in the mine.

A bat reserve is also located behind a bricked-up vault in the Hjerm Limestone Quarry. This bat reserve adds to the unusual details surrounding the Hjerm Limestone Quarry.
