Discover Selde: Art, Church and Nature

Selde combines an unusual art landscape with church history and nature observation. The Selde Lake and Art Route (Selde sø- og kunstrute) offers a particularly vivid way to get to know the area: the 3.7 km route leads from the lake into the Sculpture Village of Selde and past numerous distinctive and thought-provoking works of art. This makes Selde a practical starting point for a holiday where walks, cultural discoveries and scenic views come together.

An art trail with changing impressions

The Selde Lake and Art Route is marked with red signs. A car park is indicated for the walk, so you can take this information into account when planning your arrival. The route leads not only through a special art environment, but also draws attention to the connection between the landscape and the sculptures. Those travelling with different interests can choose the route as a shared focus for the day and keep discovering new works along the way.

During the summer holidays, a guided tour of approximately 1.5 km through the Sculpture Village of Selde is offered on Tuesday mornings from Da Winti. Stories about the individual works of art are told along the way. Since 2013, art exhibitions featuring renowned artists from across the country have been held in Selde every year. The exhibitions and the guided route therefore offer different ways of experiencing the local art: once at your own pace, and once with additional stories about the works.

Nature observation along the route and at Selde Vig

The Selde Lake and Art Route passes a birdwatching tower on Rimmervej. From the birdwatching tower along the route, you can look out across the Natura 2000 area near Selde Vig, Fursund and Fur. This viewpoint complements the art trail with a landscape experience focused not on a single structure, but on the view across the protected area.

In the immediate vicinity of Selde, there is also a birdwatching tower and a walking trail at Selde Vig. Those who want to place greater emphasis on nature observation when planning their trip will therefore find another described starting point for walks and views alongside the art route.

Selde Church and cultural traces

Selde Church, located along a road, is the northernmost church in Salling and was built mainly in the Romanesque period. During modernisation in 2007, a new altar area was created by local artist Erik Heide. A baptismal font also tells of the area's long history: it bears a runic inscription containing the name Gudliv.

Emilie Demant Hatt (1873–1958), the expressionist painter, was also born in Selde and is part of the area's cultural identity. Together with Selde Church, the art exhibitions and the sculptures, she contributes to a varied picture of the area. For travellers who want to combine nature and culture, the church can be included in the day's plans as a historical theme alongside the art and landscape experiences.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans?

When looking for a holiday apartment in Selde, you can first decide which focus should shape your stay. If art is the main attraction, the 3.7 km Lake and Art Route, with its red markings and the works along the route, provides a clear plan for the day. If you are more interested in landscapes and birds, the tower on Rimmervej, the view across the Natura 2000 area and the walking trail at Selde Vig move to the forefront.

If you are travelling with children and adults who have different interests, you can spread these themes over several days or different parts of the day: works of art and stories, church history or nature observation each appeal to different kinds of curiosity. It is best to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home to match the itinerary you prefer for your stay in Selde.
